If these are the only two you are considering, I would go with Reel Rollers for the Honda engine if nothing else. I like for my equipment to start when I want to use it. I'm interested in the Reel Rollers mower but will probably still go with a used greens mower.
I’d sell you mine if you weren’t 1000 miles away. My 220e is too much for my weirdly shaped and sloped lawn

Hey! Just an FYI.. we (Rolux) will soon be offering Honda engines on our machines. This adds to the various choices you can get from us including:

1) various machine sizes (17”, 20”, 25” and at some point 30”)

2) 6, 9 or 12 blade count

3) different types of front rollers which add or remove weight etc 👍
Do you have an idea on a date when you will be offering the X series reel mowers with Honda engines in the states? I am interested in purchasing the X20 but would much rather wait on a Honda engine option if it is coming sometime soon. Thanks!

Loop-style handles? ;)

Not sure why so many people are hung up on Honda engines. Ive had to "fix" just as many Honda engines as B&S engines etc. Its all in how you maintain them. 99% of the time its a dirty carb from gas/ethanol being left in it. I have both Honda and B&S engines and they all start first pull every time. Stop paying more for a name and start taking better care of your stuff.

Say it LOUDER for the people in the back......

That said - The Honda GX is second to none for aftermarket parts availability. BUT it's easier to get OEM Briggs stuff IMO. I'm thinking about doing a re-power this winter with a small Vanguard instead of a Honda.

When it comes to the quality of the engines, 99% of homeowners don't NEED a commercial quality engine to get 20+ years of service. There's really nothing wrong with the Honda GXs, hence their popularity, but there ARE quieter engines, full pressure lube engines, etc. that we typically don't see on consumer grade equipment but are "better" than the standard Honda GX. The GX made it's name on the simple OHV design, with a simple gravity-fed float-style carb, uncomplicated ignition (I'm looking at you Kawi....), ball-bearing crankshaft mains, and a recoil starter that held up to multiple 200lb gorillas day-in and day-out. And they had all of this long before other manufacturers figured this formula out. These days, a Briggs 550 series has a similar feature set and coincidentally, looks a bit like a Honda GX dressed in black.

Man I’m so excited for this. I’ve been wanting a 26” cut for awhile and can’t find a GM 1600 in my area. I do have a Swardsman and a GM 1000, but I had to put an order in for this as Lee and his crew are top notch.

@Reelrollers I’ve looked at any Masport 660 vids I could find which isn’t much, but I’ve seen you mention in another thread, and one that has been kind of a complaint about the Masport machines is the centrifugal clutch going out. I don’t see it as much of a problem at all and it looks super simple to change out if it did happen. My question is I know y’all have incorporated separate levers for the drive and reel. Does this mean there isn’t a centrifugal clutch on this new unit?

Sorry we haven’t put a ton of videos out, there are some patents and IP that are being finalized so we were asked to keep that part of the design a little behind the scenes for a few more weeks. What I can say is the centrifugal clutch a while ago was redesigned with no problems on the Masport. Also, our mower will have a lever at the handlebars to engage and disengage the reel. Lastly, there is not a centrifugal clutch anymore, it is a direct engagement with the lever.

It's really based on my personal experience, not just randomly liking one better than the other. I service both brands to the same degree, good or bad, and get better reliability from the Honda engines I have versus B&S.

I'm not saying Briggs doesn't deserve the criticism earned from things like the ball-clutch starters, pulsejet carburetors, and Intek singles burning up headgaskets like breakfast toast. Honda also has had their share of issues, both self-inflicted and user created. Auto-chokes, GC Singles that are nearly unserviceable, the recent cam failures, etc. Kohler has had widespread issues with consumer-level engines in the past. Kawi has had issues as well, even at the commercial level. The point is that the brand name on the engine matters a whole lot less than the quality of the actual engine itself. Briggs builds some fantastic engines. They also built some real turds. Honda is generally great, but not infallible by any means. In this day of more consumers spending significant amounts of time researching their purchases online vs in-person, many will turn their nose up at a Briggs engine just because it says Briggs on it without so much as hearing it run.

That new CT Catalyst looks awfully similar to the new Rev26. Doesn’t look as beefy though and I’m sure comes with a bigger price tag. For those looking for a cartridge system I have a Swardsman and honestly never use the cartridges. In theory a cartridge system seems nice, but in my experience renting a much bigger, more capable machine from a big box store does a much better job and makes for much quicker work. Plus cartridges tend to be expensive and I can rent a dedicated machine for years before recouping the price of a cartridge. The reason I say this is because I know a lot of guys get their mind set on a cartridge system or battery powered machine. Don’t over think it.

@Reelrollers have you guys seen this new CT Catalyst and have any thoughts or comparisons?

The new CT Catalyst is pretty beefy IMO, and I wouldn't be so sure on the "bigger price tag". No pricing yet but it should be out soon.

I got an email a while back with an invitation to a Facebook group with ongoing announcements about the Revolution, but I don't have a Facebook account. Can anyone who has access tell me if anything interesting has been posted there recently?

They've been providing additional details/clarification on the mower including -

  • All sealed bearings (no grease zerks)
  • 1/8" minimum HOC (on perfectly level surface) - realistically 1/4"
  • Front and rear roller can be adjusted to keep bedknife on plane
  • All chain driven
  • Grass shield deflectors, to evenly distribute clippings in the catch bin
  • Greens mower-grade bedknife
  • Curved bottom edge on bedknife for better low HOC performance
  • Allen head screws retaining bedknife (vs flat head or philips on competitors)
  • 12 screws for bed knife (vs 6-8 of competitors)

Think that gets you up to speed

Thank you. That's interesting they clarified 1/8" minimum HOC since the marketing materials had only stated 1/4". Most of the time companies market their products with theoretical, ideal numbers rather than what consumers will actually get. That's a good sign that RR isn't trying to mislead customers.
