Mortar Sand Okay to use? 🤔

Hey everyone, my tiftuf sod is now 4 weeks old. I believe it’s fully rooted in about 98% of all areas.

I am now looking to spot level some areas. I’m going to go with a 50/50 topsoil and mortar sand. The mortar sand looks real nice and fine when I picked it up. But now that it at my house and drying I see there is a lot more pebbles than I initially thought. See picture

Is this okay to use? Or should I return and look for something else? I plan on reel mowing in a month or so and wanting to maintain around .75 hoc. Thanks in advance!

If it’s easy to return, I’d do so and try to find Mason sand instead. Mortar sand is made the same way as Mason sand but not pulverized as much so you have larger pieces. You will be much happier with the Mason sand consistency and size.

I screwed up last year and put down the sand used for pavers..really messed up that part of the yard...had to rake it out...pain....I think play sand mixed with black cow or other compost is a safe bet

I would say it isn’t optimal but in the long run shouldn’t create too many issues. Once the grass grows into it you should be safe, you could raise your HOC for a little extra insurance. I would also omit the topsoil if your goal is to level and smooth the lawn.

I bought 4yds of river sand, 1) cuz it was cheap and 2) I thought it was good for the grass. Well, now I have to screen the damn stuff 3 times to remove about 95% of the small pebbles and shells from it, going forward it's Masonry Sand for me. Lesson learned.
