Front yard was laid September 10th of last year, back yard was laid October 15th. All I have done is irrigate, mow, and apply fungicide. It had nutsedge in it when it got to me. Currently, its littered with POA, with some spurge and random broadleaf weeds scattered around. Soil sample send to Clemson last week waiting results. My question is do I have a course of action to start to eliminate weeds with sod being relatively new, or do I have to just wait it out this summer and start with a pre-emergent in the fall? This is my first year tackling the yard on my own. I just ordered a spreader mate B, should be here next week. I know that people here tend to shy away from yard mastery/ GCI academy but is there anyone that would recommend one of these tools for someone that is new and willing to learn. I feel like a year or 2 following a good plan to learn how things work and how my yard reacts to things I apply would be beneficial in learning. After I follow a plan for a while, I can start to do my own thing. Just wondering what other thoughts are and if anyone has any advice to share if they went a similar route as they learned to manage their lawn own there own.

For reference: Zorro Zoysia, 13K sq ft, Coastal NC, Zone 8B, totally new at this, lost, and winging it.

If I understand you correctly, you are thinking of paying for a turf guidance plan. If so, I would go with GCI. Me, I would just follow the Clemson or NC State zoysia maintenance recommendations. N & K and sulfur will likely serve you well, but your soil test will help you determine how much is needed. I use solutions grade ammonium sulfate + sulfate of potash at a ratio of 2:1, so that is equivalent to 2-0-1. You just weigh out each component to get the desired pounds on N and K.

The Clemson factsheet on weeds says no herbicides the first year. But maybe someone on here can chime in on that subject. I'm thinking a product like Celsius might be safe, but I would not take that to the bank;)

@Monocot Master, thanks for the replay. I was contemplating the idea of purchasing a guide until I felt comfortable enough to do without it. Just the endless choice in products alone is very overwhelming to me, not to mention choosing the correct product at the right time, as well as making sure you are applying them at the correct rate. It seems somewhat intimidating, but I assume it's like anything else in life, spend some time around it, learn from mistakes, and it will get easier with time. I am hoping someone will chime in with a recommendation for weeds. I have a small local lawn care resource store that also said that Celsius would "probably" be ok. I have a lot of money invested for it to "probably" be ok. Thanks again for the help.

I am not trying to be a wise guy when I say this, but I use a spread sheet with dates and what to do based on two inputs:
  • UGA Zoysiagrass Lawn Calendar
  • Doc's Zoysia Lawn Guide
I too have Zorro zoysia so I understand where you are coming from. Your local extension service should be able to supply you with information as well as well as Clemson, UGA, Doc and this forum.

I followed the bermuda bible on here several years ago in my old house. I moved in 2021 and started taking care of st aug and bought the yard mastery program after watching and enjoying a lot of his videos. I have really liked it. I'm about to resod my backyard with bermuda but will still use the app for app timing and keeping notes on both yards. It's just enough math/science/detail for my needs and bandwidth right now.
