Good morning,

I am wondering if it's too late to aerate a zeon zoysia lawn in the Atlanta area. I had sod installed this spring and the soil wasn't tilled before it was installed. It has been struggling and I know I need to aerate but should I wait until spring or can I get away with a round of it this late in the summer? The soil is very compacted and has a lot of clay. I have a hard time getting a shovel more than 2" deep when I dug my soil samples.

OK thank you! I keep seeing contradicting information whether to top dress with sand or soil. I've read putting sand down with the clay makes it harder. Should I not be worried about this? Also what is the right HOC before top dressing? I've been keeping it longer since it's been so hot.

Sand if you need to level. Use soil if you want to enrich. I have Zeon and clay and I use sand all the time. I use liquid products to build the soil. You'd have to till and mix in truckloads of sand to get close to making concrete. The golf courses around you probably have similar soil unless they've done heavy soil swapping and they use sand every year.

I got a buddy that plugging Emerald Zoysia.

If you put them 12 inches apart how many seasons before they grow together in your experience with Zoysia growth rate?
If it were Zeon? Several years if ever.

If you have a hard time with a shovel.....the common aeration machines....rely on it's weight to aerate so the ground has to be moist for starters.

In full sun or part sun? It's been a dry Atlanta summer too
I had a few trees removed, so now half the yard is full/half sun and the other half is half sun. Prior to this summer it has been years of shade.

I tried to get some quotes from and all the local services are saying they wont even touch a zoysia lawn until next spring. Is it worth renting a machine and doing myself or just waiting until spring?

i'd call it a year. in the spring (late apr/may) you can remove the cores and topdress/level with sand. you could consider now, something like 'tournament ready' (siteone has something similar)

from my experience, you can do it yourself and save 20$ ...or pay someone avoiding the hassle of the paperwork, lines etc
