I've read that when the soil temp gets below 50F, that growing stops. However it has been fluctuating a lot lately with the temps in my area (Northwest Indiana). When should I target turning off my sprinklers and blowing out my lines for the year? (currently use a Rachio 3 controller).

@bodean grow does not stop when soil temps get to 50F. It starts to slow down, but not just stop. For sure it stops when the soil temps get to 32F (frozen ground). The air temps don't reflect soil temps.

For indy, the lawn stops growing the first week of December. Near chicago, it could be a week earlier.

Blow the irrigation before a hard freeze. Halloween weekend is normally good for me.

I had 2 lawn care companies blowing out lines on my street yesterday. I thought it was a little early for that so I walked over and talked to the guy that put mine in this spring. He agreed but said they didn't have much to do right now so they started blowing lines. He has 5 systems to install yet this fall but can't get parts. I never would have guessed sprinkler heads would have been one of the items impacted by COVID.

I watered this morning for the last time this season. Looking ahead, almost all of the mornings will be below freezing, and we just got our first dusting of the white stuff this morning. Timers will not go off again till Monday morning, so this weekend will be a good time to blow the lines and heads.
