Hi, just got a new house in north jersey and it was sodded last November. The grass has done half decently in most parts but is rather thin, so I want to overseed it with the same type of grass this fall. I tried some mix from the store but it grew in a much lighter color and stands out pretty obviously. I just want to get the same grass with the same nice dark green shade to it.

The yard also gets limited sunlight so I'm hoping this type does alright with some shade. Is it KBG? Fine fescue?

Thanks!

Why not overseed with what you want, provided it's a cool season type?

Is this a new house, meaning could this be a contractor's grade sod?

It looks like a blend of fescues, tall and fine, but don't take my word. Maybe someone can identify the close-up pic. If it was me, I would look for another blend of mostly TTTF but with some KBG and maybe some rye in order to diversify (for your shade, grade, etc.). Then, then allow the best-suited grasses to take over. That's what most blends do and that requires a couple of years to grow-in.

It could be a northern mix - Fescue, perennial rye and KBG.

While different grass types have different genetic colour, over time an over seed will blend in with the existing grass and you won't be able to tell the difference. New grass comes in lighter and darkens as it matures.

You are never going to completely match the colour unless you kill what you have and start over. Not all perennial ryegrass varieties, for example, have the same colour. The same is true of KBG and TTTF.

Well, I just want it to match and be dark green, but if all cool northern grasses eventually darken into the same shade that's fine then.

Yes it's a new house and the contractor laid the sod, why? Thank you
