Turning Hayfield into TTTF lawn

I am looking to turn a former hayfield into a TTTF lawn. It's mostly Timothy Hay mixed in with weeds that I have been mowing all summer. Would you guys recommend killing it all off with glysophate and reseeding, or using something like Speedzone for the weeds, aerating, and then putting down the seed? It's my first time doing any sort of renovation, and I plan to seed early September. Any recommendations?

Man, that looks a lot like my yard. We built a house on former pasture land and moved in a year ago. I have a bunch of timothy that I can't get rid of without starting all over - and I'm not going to do that on 2.5 acres. My plan is to continue blasting the broadleaf and grassy weeds I can, overseed with TTTF, and see what I can do to choke out the timothy. Since it does grow a little faster, I may play with glyphosate painting, but that takes a looooong time to apply.

Having it to do over again, I'd have either killed everything before grading or waited until after grading and stuff started growing to kill it all before sowing my seed.

It sort of depends on how much work you want to put in to it and what your goal is in a lawn. But imo the best option would be to hit it with a few rounds of gly. Fallowing would be very important as well if you want to minimize the chance of all those existing weeds creeping in to your newly seeded lawn. Id probably also skip the aerating, esp if you plan on doing it right before putting down your seed.

That is what I'm worried about. I'm not sure how well the fescue would choke out the timothy. I'm thinking it would be worth the extra time to try and kill it all now

Thanks for the input. I agree, I was only planning to aerate if I left the timothy in place instead of killing it all off.
