Summer Heat and Mowing

I typically mow every 3-4 days, we are going to hit with 85-95 degree temps this week. Would I be better off waiting after the heat wave or continue to cut in the evenings? I've got irrigation but the front lawn gets blasted with heat and sun all day. Even with the irrigation, it's still showing signs of stress in certain areas.

Mine has slowed to a crawl in regard to growth. I haven't mowed in a week but I do tend to mow in the evening as able although temps are still low to mid eighties with high humidity.

It matters. If it's a dry heat I would pass on cutting unless it's really long. Long grass helps shade the soil to hold moisture. If it's hot and humid I would cut late day when the sun is low and grass is dry. Heat , humidity and long grass holds moisture and leads to more fungus pressure.

Very simple: mow if you need to. It might require planning ahead before a period of heat. If you don't need to mow...don't. It may do more harm than good.

I mowed tonight and last night, and I'm going to try to stretch it at least a week this time, if not more. No measurable rain in almost 3 weeks now, and at least high 80s forecast almost every day for a week, plus. Grass is beginning to struggle, and I'm watering it. I think one of my neighbors has only done some hand watering this year, and his looks like it's fairly brown now. We need rain soon. If these temps that are coming tomorrow look like they're going to hang on beyond a week, I may have to mow once in between, and then water all areas again an extra time if no rain comes.

This is what I'm running into now. The turf has held up fairly well but it's starting to struggle, even with solid irrigation.

I mowed this evening and had quite a bit of clippings, not more than 1/3 so I'm glad I gave the turf a trim and the temps cooled off pretty quickly
This is a good practice. Get your mow in during the evening, when the grass is less stressed, and don't skip it if you have decent clippings, so you don't violate the 1/3 rule, if you get a surprise rain and the grass explodes. Then, you'll have extra time to pull your blades off to sharpen them, while you're irrigating/watching the grass grow. A sharp blade will make a huge difference in the heat of the summer, to reduce injury and loss of water through the leaf tips.

I definitely keep my blades sharp and back ups so I don't have to waste time sharpening them on the spot. I've been staying true to trying to mow every 4 days, even if it's not overly long. The lawn has thickened up pretty well because of it. I've been taking a closer look, even with a good fungicide regiment and rotation, I still have some outbreaks looming and I have the wonderful fine fescue that I truly dislike, starting to check out in the heat. I think that's most of the issues that I'm seeing. Poa A is also getting kicked in the teeth because of the heat as well.

One thing I did this year is really try and stay on top of the mowing.
It was a somewhat dry cool spring and going into late june and july we got some good rain. I had some fungus issues all season. Right now every time I mow the "fine" blade grass in my lawn gets brown tips. Plus mo matter how sharp my blades this fine grass gets torn ends.
The funny thing is I usually dont need to mow come july- August so its been a decent summer for lawn growth. I have been trying to cut just ahead of any rain fall.

Its been a unusual year so far.
My lawn has never looked better or had had so many issues. Fun stuff
