St Augustine Plugs

I bought a plug tool and have been taking plugs from healthy inconspicuous spots of my yard and placing them in my trouble areas 8-10" inches apart and staggered. Is this the proper method? Some are surviving but others are not doing so well. I do a heavy saturation water in the early morning 1 day a week. Should I be placing some fertilizer or anything in the hole before inserting the plug? Appreciate any help.

I've found st. Augustine plugs to be more difficult than Bermuda. StA for me has been very slow to establish and begin to send out runners and some of the plugs do do not survive for unknown reasons. It just takes time but they will take off eventually. Probably need more water as others have said.
