Theres a lot to unpack here.
Backstory: installed Emeralds Zoy in April 2018. Had a few really good seasons with it. However, in the upstate of South Carolina, it’s very prone to spring dead spot and really slow repair. I also have three dogs that take their toll on the right side of the yard as you can see. I’ve given up, trying to revive this stuff every season with 50% kill on the right side. The majority of the center of my yard is actually Bermuda that came in eventually started to spread a couple years after purchasing the sod. Since this Emerals was from Super Sod, my assumption is, it’s one of their versions likely 419 that lay dormant in the zoysia. I’ve tried to control it, but I can only suppress. The left side of the yard has about 500 ft.² of really nice Emerald. Doesn’t see a lot of dog traffic and has full sun more of the time in the growing season.

After looking at the robustness of the Bermuda, I’ve decided to focus on what seems to thrive back here and embrace it. Given the salt tolerance, drought tolerance and aggressive, repair tendencies of Bermuda it seems like a good fit. I’ve decided to repair the right side of the yard with Royal TXD with a little bit extra Yukon. Scalped everything down added a mixture of lawn soil and potting soil over the surface for the Bermuda. I’m expecting this Bermuda to spread aggressively and eventually take over whatever Emerald is left.

It wont be a pure breed back yard, but my hope is that it turns into a blend of similar good looking cultivars that can take a lot thrown at it and bounce back nicely. Ill keep folks posted on the results.

Thanks. We will see how this goes. Once it spreads and I get everything cut to an 1.0-1.5" should blend in fine.

Front yard was Zenith, But I converted it to Titanium 2LS Tall last year. Same problem, but without dog traffic. Zenith looked great after 80 hrs of work from April to July and it only do have it become challenged by October and was a nighmare to ward off fungus over the winter losing 25% to winterkill/SDS. We will see how the 2LS holds up this summer in Zone 8.

Quick update after 28 days. Royal TXD+ more Yukon filling in nicely and the native cultivars are spreading out as well. As Del Griffith would say weve had a small weed problem that was prevalent at time of sewing. After letting things settle in I hit the crabgrass and henbit with 24D, Mecoprop, Dicamba with some added Quinclorac (Basic Spectracide WS for lawns +0.25 oz/gal Quin) earlier this week. As the literature suggested, the common bermuda is sensitive to added quinclorac as can be seen by some yellowing. however the Royal TXD+ Tukon seems to be holding its own. Looks like the rule of thumb is wait 21-28 days + a couple of mowings after germ before applying these. Also been hitting it with Flagship, Growth Prod 18-0-6 and Humichar. Should continue to spread.

All told, its been a tough spring with some voilent swings in soil temp in Feb April May and June combined with a very wet run through 6/30. Its made things tough for zoysia or any other lawn. This happens from time to time as we we are in on the edge of zone 8 and 7B. Even experts with a 10x10 flat full sun stand are having issues.

Will update in 30 days

Update 9/30/23
Things have blended in fairly well over the last 90 days. Still have some time to mesh before we run out of grow time here in the upstate and for the crabgrass to die after treatment. HOC seems to be OK at about 2.25-2.5" for me. Seems to hold up to French Bulldog p*** better than the emerald. Thats stuff is mild xenomorph blood. Last thing Ill add is that the TXD/Yukon blend grows fast. Ideal mowing interval is likely 1-2 days shorter than common. Next spring should be much better with use of pre emergent in the off season.
