I'm planning to renovate a section of my my tall fescue backyard, 6000 ksqft, in the NC Piedmont region to Kentucky bluegrass. I'm considering using Barenbrug Turf Blue HGT after coming across a couple of threads (TTTF/KBG blend vs pure KBG (Central NC) and KBG Power), and I'd love to hear your experiences and feedback.

Specifically, I'm looking for insights on:
  • Whether to use the plain seed or the seed with Yellow Jacket
  • Are the benefits of Yellow Jacket worth the lower seed count (per pound)
  • Any challenges or considerations specific to the NC Piedmont region (climate, soil type, etc.)
  • I have found a couple of sites for sourcing Barenbrug Turf Blue HGT seeds, but I have never done business with any of them...recommendations?
I'm open to any advice or recommendations you may have.

Why switch to KBG over TTTF?

I've never been a fan of tall fescue, and I prefer shorter grass. Bermuda grass is also a pain to keep out of my landscaping areas. When I started researching different types of grass, KBG stood out as the best option for me. I like that it can be mowed shorter, has a softer, finer blade, and is just what I am after in a lawn.

I cant give you any insight for use in your specific location, but I have bought HGT from both Todd Valley and Twin City. Both are reputable places. The HGT will def be a lighter shade of green compared to kbg like mazama, midnight, etc.

Even without irrigation the HGT will do well.

Its hard to tell from the photos. But Barenbrug grasses are usually lighter in genetic color. Its def not bad looking grass. But maybe a little lighter than midnight for example. Unfortunately i dont have any photos of the hgt.

What is your HOC now?

Strange how you mentioned Barenbrug HGT..I started a test pot with both HGT and their RPR combined about 6 weeks ago...The RPR came up first in a week and the HGT just did a few day ago, like almost 6 weeks... Color is lighter than my 4th mil. test pot on both....I had to buy it with the Yellow jacket, waste of money, prefer bare seed...So far not impressed with it. Will throw it down in back/side yard in late Aug....
