Reno TTTF to Bermuda for Kids Soccer?

My kids play soccer and the TTTF just doesn’t work when they want to practice their skills. I’m considering renovating up to 6000 sqft of the back of our property for them with a hybrid Bermuda.

The backyard gets 6-8 hours of sun a day.

I use a Toro Timemaster currently for my TTTF and it works great, but I know that the lowest setting of 1.25” won’t give me the field I want. I would need to reel cut to get lower than the 1.75” HOC that I could maintain with the Timemaster. So, let’s just say I get a reel mower and I’m able to maintain.

Another hurdle I have is I do not have irrigation in my backyard due to the septic field. I do have hoses and sprinklers and a smart water controller.

I see that in my area sod farms offer TifTuf, Tifway 419, and TifSport.

So, with what I laid out, I need help with the following questions.

1. Am I crazy to convert TTTF to Bermuda in Greensboro NC?

2. I’ve had common Bermuda in a previous home 20 years ago and it was difficult to keep out of the mulched landscape areas. With better knowledge is it manageable to keep out?

3. Can hoses and sprinklers manage my watering requirements?

4. Which hybrid Bermuda would work best for my situation?

I’d really appreciate any help I could get on this.

Yes, Bermuda is a better surface. I manage my 9k sq ft with hoses and sprinklers. It’s a pain, but y’all get way more rain than we do and you aren’t as hot. Budget 1” of water per week from two waterings minus any rain you get. I’m sure it will be manageable. It may also pay off to have the kids do it as part of their training 😉.

Tifway 419 is a very common soccer grass. It’s a good playing surface. Remember you’ll need to mow 2x per week minimum.

Keeping it out of the mulch bed is just part of the maintenance. Others may have better info on that.

Can’t tell you if your crazy to want to switch.

I think from a playability standpoint, tifway419 is preferred. I say this due to the upright nature of its growth which lends itself to the ball sitting on it nicely. The fields in play on are 419, our college field was 419, and even the fc Dallas fields are 419. I know other teams have different cultivars now, but 419 still holds up. Not saying tiftuff doesn’t, just that I don’t see it much (in my experience) on playing surfaces.
