6b. 3000 sq ft. Current grass is a mix of tall fescue, PRG and satan (Poa trivialis). Planning to replace with 2 lbs Provista KBG per 1000 sqft.

I work 12+ hrs per day, and have 3 young children, and I’m on call in the hospital two weekends between now and September, so it’s going to be tough. The goal is to get seed down by mid August. Doing things quickly is the primary consideration.

i haven’t set the dates yet, but order of operations will be:

1. Gly
2. Mow as low as my mower will go (seems to be around 1”)
3. Throw down some top soil over depressions left when I did my irrigation system
4a. Remove a vertical inch or two of soil from where the grass will meet the curb, such that the soil will end up in line with the curb, if that makes sense.
4b. Dig out 4” sprinklers and deepen the holes and replace with 6-8” sprinklers for better coverage
- didn’t get to do this
5. Rent Harley rake to even out soil including that from #3
6. Lay down PV-KBG seed 2 lbs / 1000 sqft (I will have pre-germinated in water for 5 days prior, switching out water every 12 hrs)
7. Very light dusting of Scott’s starter with mesotrione
- didn’t have time to do this
8. Light application of peat moss with rolling compost thingy
9. Light application of straw
10. Burlap over everything
I have major slopes on my lawn one big storm and it’s over, cuz I won’t have time to fix it. So keeping seed down is paramount.
- ran out of burlap and straw blankets so used straight up ez straw out of desperation

How does it sound so far?

thanks so very much for your consideration!

i did two last year and somehow it was right down the middle with everything. I don’t see how but two of them were. I didn’t do one this year. Don’t have time to wait for results or make fixes anyway.

i figured since it’s Provista maybe I could avoid second gly app. Was afraid someone would say that. Darn, maybe I should :(

thanks so much for taking the time it really means a lot!!!

3 days s/p scalp & gly. Don’t see much of anything growing. Hoping most of the green/blue is the dye I used with the Gly.

I also removed all sprinklers so I don’t damage them with the Harley rake.

I then proceeded to try to get rid of the rest of the grass and level with a Harley rake. I would recommend strongly against this. It was an awful mess of a job, I didn’t get all the dead grass despite over 8 hours of work, and I think it is less level than before. Horrible regrets here.

I did pregerminate. For 7 days, but then I ran out of milorganite and so I couldn’t dry half of it, so I literally had to straight up waste it and then throw down virgin Provista seed, so I’m going to get germination at all different times now. Gosh recalling it here just reminds me how much of a dumbass I can be. But I literally had to do everything in 1 day. I just ran out of time. I think the Harley rake didn’t work because I didn’t know what I was doing and my grass wasn’t yet fully dead… maybe? Enough people felt it was the “right tool for the job” that clearly the problem was me.

Seed down + 20 days

planning to fill in the bald areas in 3-4 days, got it pregerminating and recalibrated my irrigation to hit those areas this time. Will be using mesotrione this time (was afraid to due to pregerminating last time but in the test areas where I did use it it grew up just the same).

Thats what I am wondering. I will be day 21 on Saturday but have 90 degree days through Monday. Back to mid 70s on Tuesday so I was thinking of throwing down a .8 of N. Lesco starter fertilizer. Just curious on the timing with sprout and pout. I am a week behind you. I have been following your journal and have started my own.

Thank you on the grass and house. After watching Jake the Lawn Kid and Allyn with their projects I'm going to send it and feed the crap out of it. Do my .8 N next week and repeat every two or three weeks depending on what is happening. I think that's a solid plan on waiting for the first mow it looks like you are pretty close to that. It's hard to tell but it appears your grass has gotten taller quickly. Wondering if the pre germ has any effect on the growth development? The majority of mine has remained pretty low. I had germination at day 6 with the usual popping in the rows of slit seeding but has really filled in the last couple of days (I did cross seeding). Do you feel it popped up on day 4 throughout the whole yard or just in spots and filled in over the next couple of weeks? I still have quite a few bare spots with a few sprouts here and there, but I had to back off the watering because of my sprinkler lay out and trying to dry my over saturated areas (pictures in the journal). Around my heads seem to not be filling in. I wonder if it is overwatering since there is always a slight pool or i just under planted and raked in to deep or away. I had a lot of clay around the heads as well so maybe some wash out as well. Overall, I am happy with what I have for almost an acre of grass planted. I should have another 50 days of growing(hopefully). Last year was the 1st year in 5 years we didn't have a 20 in snow storm middle of October.

I was surprised how quickly the areas where my sprinklers hit raised up. All of the accounts about Provista made me think it would take a lot longer. The areas where my sprinklers didn’t hit obviously didn’t do jack. I think it’s very clear that the areas I put peat moss did the best, as usual. I must say that pregermination and peat moss are two truly essential components to ensuring success. If only I had taken the care to ensure I had decent coverage with my sprinkler system, I might be doing okay.

So, a couple things…

first the areas I didn’t get germination in the first time, I don’t appear to be getting germination on the second time. First time they got no water, second time they washed away. It being Sept 13, I’m not sure what to do now. Anyone got any ideas?

second I saw some beautiful tall grass very lush and somewhat thick in a section, then quickly realized it was Poa Trivialis. I knew it would be back, just didn’t think so quick or so thickly. Now that I look around, there are patches of it in multiple areas. If it looked like this all the time, I’d purposely grow it, but of course it doesn’t. I’ve also got tons and tons and tons of weeds. I keep reassuring myself that after I hit all of this with Glyphosate in Spring and then reseed the areas with Provista at that time, I should be able to get to mostly Provista KBG by next fall. Does that seem realistic???

Any words of solace or wisdom?

Post a picture of some of your spots so I can compare. I'm still pretty low on majority of my yard. Have you mowed yet or getting close? I have crabgrass everywhere and I want to mow just for that. I still have a bunch of germination going on. I'm not sure if they will survive or not. I only have two maybe three weeks left. I don't know if I will even get a mow in. Wondering if that will affect my over wintering.

Haha I mowed mostly for the weed grass too, and to vacuum up leaves. Id say only 15% of the PV got “mowed” and the rest just got mowed over. I still have sizable bald areas, and I have no idea what to do with them. My understanding is that the horizontal spread/fill radius is significantly less than traditional KBG, so I don’t think I can do that. I’m sure triv has plans for those areas… :(

I am just letting my bare areas go and see what I got in the spring. I was hoping the non germinated areas were going to hold out until the spring but they are sprouting 30 days in(expected but we hit 36 overnight so I'm not sure what will become of the new grass). I have a bunch of seed left(way more than I need or wanted listened to the guy who wanted to go with heavy seeding rate and then ended up with 35lbs left. My wallet is still mad). So, I will weasle the ground and spread and cover with peatmoss in the spring. If you watched Jake the lawn kid and his recent provista updates we are both doing ok. I am on a three year plan. Get the bigger areas going in the spring let it fill in and feed the crap out of it. I have a few areas that I pushed in to my non grass areas and will be taking plugs and transfering to needed spots.
