First time to use a pre-emergent on our lawn and just wanted to confirm. My understanding is that I want to wait until right before the soil temperatures reach the 60's and then put down my pre-emergent. Not when the overnight temps drop into the 60's...but instead the soil temperature itself? (Currently we're just dropping into the high 60's at night - but are still getting into the 90's during the day - North Texas area)
I'm seeing on the Texas A&M website they recommend putting down pre-emergent the last week of August or first week of September - but using the Greencast soil temp site (Soil Temparature Maps | GreenCast | Syngenta) it seems like according to the 5 year average for our zip code - the soil temps don't drop from the 70's to the 60's until mid-October.
I definitely don't want to wait too long to apply...but also don't want to lose a bunch of protection time either...and of course want to make sure I'm doing this correctly.
Does that sound right?...applying maybe the first part of October and using the soil temp website as the best guide? Or is there wisdom to instead applying the pre-emergent as soon as you get a few lows in the 60's at night - regardless of the actual soil temp?
