PRG Overseed 2023

I’m overseeding with PRG this year for the first time. 🤞 I’m in central Alabama so I was thinking of putting my seed out in the first couple of weeks of October. Does that sound about right? Also, do I need to scalp my bermuda before putting out PRG seed or just cut it down a bit?

Florence area. What I look for is consistent highs in the mid-80's and lows in the low 60's to upper 50's. Of course once I put mine down we ended up getting a few 90 degree days.
Awesome. My plan is to scalp and put out seed on the weekend of Oct 7-8. According to Farmer's Almanac, that's about 30 days out from our first usual frost. Going through your journal from the past few years, your PRG has looked absolutely amazing. Hoping mine will be half as nice. Between you and @Reel_Alabama, I'll definitely be following your journeys this year. Especially since you guys will probably be a couple of weeks or so ahead of me for each step.

Seeds look to have started germinating. I see some of the white fiber coming out of the seeds if I look close enough. Getting some nice light rain here for the next 12 hours or so. We have not had measurable rain since early September.
Getting a lot of rain here too. FINALLY!!
Just hope it’s not so much that it’s washing any of my seed away. I haven't seen anything as far as seeds sprouting for me. I put my seed out on 10-8 so hopefully I’ll see something in the next day or two. 🤞🏼

I put out Champion GQ rye on October 8 and I still don't see anything germinating. When should I start to worry? It's been pretty cool this week. Probably in the high 60's to low 70's for highs. Are the cool temps just making it take a little longer?

I put out a little granular fert and got a cut in today. I'd like to improve the color before Halloween.

That looks awesome @Reel_Alabama!

Do you guys put out seed with a drop spreader or just a regular rotary spreader? My PRG has come up great but it’s really splotchy. Thin in some places and thick in others. I believe it was my crappy Scott’s spreader but I wasn’t sure.

@Khs2424 How long into the seeding are you? I used a drop spreader, but my thin areas just lagged a bit. I have a bit of seed I’m pre-germinating to put in sone thinner areas this week.
I put seed out October 8th so, just a day over 2 weeks. What has com up looks great. I'm very impressed with it. Boy does that stuff grow fast once it germinates! Did my first cut yesterday. I thought it was kind of funny that the PRG smells different to me when you cut it versus the bermuda. Or maybe that was just my imagination.

@Khs2424
I use a drop spreader in two different directions. Then, I walk around and throw seed by hand along the house and fence.
If this year goes well and I'm happy with the PRG, I may invest in a drop spreader for next year, just for seeding. Seems obvious that it would be a lot more consistent putting out seed compared to a rotary spreader. Do either of you guys have a particular spreader you like best?

I recently purchased an Earthway 2600 to replace my crappy Scott's Deluxe spreader. Maybe it will do a better, more consistent job? I think the "edge guard" on the Scott's is why I have the thicker/denser areas.

Am I correct to assume I can do this (the cool season version) on my new PRG? Or should I wait until it’s more established? I’m wanting to make it POP for Halloween. 🎃 👻

To you guys that use a drop spreader to put out PRG seed. What setting do you normally set the spreader at? I broke down and bought the Scott’s spreader, mainly just for the rye seeding and want to be prepared for next year.

Do you have to kill off the rye? It's looking so nice right now here in Central Alabama.

If so, I was thinking of waiting to do my kill off until after all the azaleas and other stuff bloom. Same thing they do at Augusta National, right? I mean, if it works for them...😂
