PGR on Tall HOC?

I've been reading about the benefits of plant growth regulator other than just slowing down vertical growth. People say it promotes a thicker lawn as the grass grows more horizontally, which got me thinking: You hear everyone talk about spraying PGR on their low cut lawns when reel mowing, but is it beneficial to use it on higher cut turf? Is this common practice, and if not, how come?

It's more prevalent on lower cut turf because it's easier to break the 1/3 rule when your cutting at 1" or lower.

The benefits from growth regulator for thickening your lawn isn't overly significant. PGR does what it says it does. Regulates (slows) top growth.

Can it be used on higher cut turf? Yes. Usually higher rates are needed. Is it as necessary? I'd say no. If your cutting twice a week on higher cut turf that's probably enough. Sometimes with lower turf twice a week can still get out of hand.

I wonder if the type of PGR has an impact. I've been on a full program this year of applying Anuew (Prohexadione) on a 3-1/2" TTTF lawn and it is noticeably thicker. So much so that I'm actually concerned about potential problems with fungus. The lawn has not thinned in the heat and humidity this year the way it normally does.

The wildest impact has been in the DMZ between my driveway and a neighbor's. I struggle with encroaching Bermuda grass every year and the short, squat tillering of the Bermuda hit with PGR has been interesting to watch. Certainly has made it easier to find and spot treat!

EDIT: 3-1/2" not 3-1/3" HOC

I mow at 3.25 inches and higher from mid Spring to late Summer, and I use T-Nex during much of the same timeframe. If you're asking whether it does anything, yes, it does. If it showed no effects, I would have stopped using it.

That's pretty interesting that it has advantages for longer turf as well. I've also read that PGRs will drive root growth. I'm currently dealing with a nasty that problem, 2 inches +) on my lawn. I'm wondering if T-nex applications would be beneficial to drive the roots deeper, or a hindrance in generating more thatch. Anyone have some insight on this?

Any PGR, by its very nature, should help reduce thatch build up, although I don't think it will solve a problem if it already exists.
