Nitrogen Loss in Urea

So I'm thinking of throwing down Urea tonight and it's supposed to start raining at 2 am. Would there be any nitrogen loss in 6 hours of sitting on the ground? If not, when would it start losing it?

I'm probably being way over cautious and maybe over thinking with this, but was just curious if I'm wasting product by waiting so long to water it in.

I am not impressed by urea (the one I have) so far. It hits lighting fast but very spotty. At 0.25N/M it hands full of product over 2000 sqf. You barely have 10ish granules over sqf. If a SGN 150 or lower exist I may try this one more time. Otherwise a greens fert 16-1-2 with 145 SGN and 3% Fe and 75% AMS, may be my next trial for a spoon feeding...

In my experience going a little more per 1000 gives more even results. Say a third per 1000. Especially for smaller areas. Also are all urea products prill sizes the same? Smaller would be better if they do make them smaller.

@JDgreen18 I fert'ed 6000sqf in total. I wish I can find a 'generic' urea in a more fine texture. For now only a professional product I found gives a precision app by being produced for golf greens or tees. I can also buy those at 45-60CAD per 55lbs, where straight urea is (no promotion) from the local farm at 49.99. Applying on a mature grass at 0.5N/M will definitely yield better results. It is so fast... I give it a credit for that. And all this is happening far far North :). So I hope you have better options. I simply shared that size matters...in this case in an opposite way

Volatilization is temperature dependent. In cold, dry weather (like when winterizing) it can sit out for days waiting for rain. Obviously late Summer is a different situation.

Yeah, even a half lb rate of large (average?) prills didn't flow out of the spreader real well from what I remember, trying to do perpendicular sets of passes. I haven't used pure urea in a few years partly because I don't like how it spreads.

Someone could do well selling micro urea for lawn use.

@Babameca Not sure about foilar N apps on new grass, but on my established lawn I don't water in the spray app, especially with the cooler temps. The risk for burning is much lower. Either way, make sure you let it sit on the blade for a few hours (overnight will be fine) then rinse it off, if you'd like.

I highly doubt Urea loses potency that fast, otherwise whats happening to all the Urea in my open 46-0-0 bag from last year? Did all the nitrogen leak out the open bag? No :) Not sure why it would be any different if its laying on the ground.
It is when urea comes in contact with the urease at the soil surface that volatilization occurs. That's also why the urea wont volatilize just sitting in the bag and also why it wont volatilize if you spray it foliarly and let it just sit on the leaf. .10" of irrigation or rain is all you need to minimize losses, but if you left it just sitting on the soil surface for weeks without rain or irrigation you could lose up to 20%.

All of that info was from Elizabeth Guertal, Ph.D., Auburn University and was talked about in the end of this webinar The Ins and Outs of Foliar Fertilizers

While we're talking about prill size. I'm very happy with my coverage when using the urea I found locally. I've bought from 3 or 4 different suppliers but this one has the smallest prill. I don't spread any less than .5lb N/M but I'm sure this would work pretty well down to about .25lb N/M.

It comes from Kirby Agri in Lancaster, PA so maybe your local suppliers can order it?
