Hey all -
Last year I put down a 50/50 mix of compost and top soil, it was ok but not great.

This area is about 1K and the Spring (now) after my reno, the grass in this area is not doing as well as the rest.

I think that Either A.) it's lacking Calcium or B.) the PH is off.

Does this seem right for new soil coming from the shipping yard, I'm not really inclined to do a soil test but wondering with others experiences are with news soil...

The main reason I think this is that organic matter tends to lower or raise ph and this is the reason the PH most likely off.

Can anyone confirm?

Thanks

You can check on your pH and calcium by getting a soil test. Use your state's extension service or use a lab. Avoid the online soil test kits.

Compost will decompose but top soil doesn't. Be careful not to change the grade of your yard by applying too much topsoil. It should always drain away from the house.

As for the quality of what you bought, who knows? Topsoil can be most anything they dig up.
