So here is where it starts , my lawn journey. I’ve been in this home for 25 years on the south shore of Long Island. I have had landscapers maintaining the lawn since I moved in. I have been a 12-16 hour a day guy at work since I’ve been in the house and have a part time gig on the weekends. The scapers have been a proud bunch. They come and tell me about all the schooling they have gone through and all the politicians lawns they take care of every time I get a new one. I never haggled any of them on their asking price. Full yearly service, clean ups , apps, weekly cuts, thatch, aeration, over seed, you get the point. Well apparently they don’t teach how to get rid of clover and weeds in a lawn at the universities they went to. I’m done with them, the wife and I will handle it going forward. I’m already receiving deliveries of the needed equipment.
The lawn, well I guess you could call it a mutt. Highland bent grass with some FF mixed in. I have come to the conclusion that this is going to be a multi year project done in phases. Please feel free to tell me I’m an azzhat when appropriate. We do that around here and don’t take it personal.
Goal for this season is to just keep it green and get rid of the weeds and clover. This is because I want to test the soil and see where I am at, what I need to fix, and how to fix it. Depending on how long it takes me to fix the soil a renovation will follow with fine bladed super dark TTTF blend with 4th Milenium as the core. Not sure yet on the other cultivars but they need to be dark and fine to fine/med ,good for 7a And have decent shade tolerance. I don’t have the time to baby KBG so this is my attempt to get as close as possible.
House faces north and the water table is 25-30” below ground at times and has tons of Fe in it. I have irrigation as well. I figured with the deep roots of the TTTF I may be able to tap into the ground water at some point in life. Summer is hot and humid as all get out. I’m a mile and a half from salt water but I’m not impacted by it and it’s rare that they salt my street In winter. This picture is from google earth in summer of 2023. I had a house renovation going on so don’t mind the material in the yard and closed pool. Total sq ft of lawn going counter clockwise wise is 500,1100,1600,1600=4800. This lawn needs a dethatch every spring without question and will be first on the to do list . I’ll get some real pics up as soon as I can for the documentation purpose. Getting snow in the morning so bear with me.
I will be learning as I go and make no assumptions or claims of knowledge especially when it comes to chemicals. Wish me luck and thanks for the learning I have gained reading your experiences. Hope to pass it forward at some point.
