Leaves/straw blanket smothering new growth?

Hi all-

I'm 7 days into a quasi top/overseed in my semi-shady backyard, seeded with TF. One half of the backyard needed so much top dressing to even out ruts that it's basically a renovation; the other half had about 30% existing grass when I overseeded.

A couple nights ago, I started to see some shoots coming up. For the most part, things are going well, but I'm concerned about a couple things smothering my progress.

First up, straw blankets. Last time I overseeded, the 0.25" drizzle in the forecast turned into a 2.5" downpour, washing all my seed away. I have PTSD now, so I got some straw blankets and soil tackifier to help with erosion. In some places, the straw is pretty thin and shoots are coming through as I'd expect (Pic #1). In other places, the straw is so thick you can't see the dirt through(Pic #2). There is some growth in these areas, but when I peel back the blanket, the growth underneath is yellow/white (Pic #3)and I'm concerned the growth is going to die off unless I let it see sun soon. I could pretty easily pick up the offending areas without trampling the yard. We're supposed to get some thunderstorms through Tuesday and after that, the weather should just be sunny. I'm wondering about picking up the straw in those areas after Tuesday. Any guidance there?

Second problem is leaves. As much as I tried to get my project going a couple weeks earlier to avoid this problem, I wasn't able to, so here we are. Where I pretty much started from scratch (Pic #5), the leaves aren't too bad. In the other area (Pic #4) I'm a bit more concerned. 3 days of thunderstorms won't help anything either. Pic #1 is a pretty good representation of what the yard looks like most places (with or without straw). Should I just be patient, bide my time, and wait to blow leaves in a few weeks? Or do I risk smothering the growth?

Thanks so much in advance!

Thanks bernstem. For anyone wondering about blowing leaves: I ended up running the blower over the yard yesterday afternoon, being cautious to just minimize my steps as much as possible. My thought process was that even if my footsteps damage some new growth, the surface area of my footsteps was going to be much less than the surface area of the leaves that would have been smothering new growth. Will report back.

Agreed. I'd remove the blankets completely if you aren't worried about the erosion portion anymore (and you aren't going to be tearing a bunch of grass up). From my experience, the grass will come in much better. I've tried these blankets multiple times now and some spots I've kept them and most of the other spots I've removed them. I am actually removing mine tomorrow (Rhino Erosion King Jr Straw Blankets; probably built the same as yours) in about 900 sq.ft that I re-did. They say it is all degradable, but man...that stuff is so problematic if you don't stake it down exactly the way its supposed to be. The netting (and string stuff) is awful on these. But, they do a good job of helping with erosion early on for sure. The rains stopped that just came through and the grass is tall enough now that I don't have to worry about erosion much anymore, which was the main use of the blankets in my case. On top of no rain for several days, the grass should continue to grow and thicken up. Good luck on your project!
