Lawn leveling

I dethatched, aerated, and applied a layer of sand exactly 10 days ago.
I believe the lawn is starting to come around but I’m worried. I know some areas of sand are too thick because I can pull the sand back and the grass is turning bright neon yellow. The grass that has come through, needs to be mowed, but I don’t want to mow and disturb the sand around it where grass hasn’t come through.
I’ve been worrying every day since doing it. Any thoughts on how long until the grass pushes through?

What kind of grass? If you smothered it completely it is most likely not going to grow through. Areas that are smothered need to be seeded, if it’s just thick you can go around with a broom and try to brush the sand/grass to get it to come through so it can grow. Sand is self leveling to an extent so mowing shouldn’t be much of an issue. I chose to manually reel mow at first because I seeded after I sand leveled because it was very thick.

assuming this is tttf/prg/kbg

bring in top soil and reseed
I wouldn’t add top soil. That would defeat the purpose of leveling with sand.

When leveling with sand the grass should never be smothered. You have to keep working on dragging, brushing, and/or watering the sand below the shoots/node and into the soil or thatch layer.

10 days is a long time for it to expect to recover. I would say 2-3 days the most, is what I would expect for the existing grass to survive. Now since it’s KBG it can still spread and cover the bare areas, but this can take a while.

Mow any parts that are higher than 3“, but keep the chute closed, so any loose seeds don’t fly too far. Walking and driving a mower over it will help, not hurt. Just use regular blades, not any big lift. I’m impatient so I’d throw some seed on top the deepest parts, maybe 3-4lb / 1000sqft, and roll it in or drive a lawn tractor over it. If you haven’t fertilized with K yet, I’d put down a 12/12/12 or 15/15/15 fert at 1/2 the recommended rate (or about 1/3-1/2lb N per 1kSqft). Then re-apply the same fert 3weeks later. Will help establish and shoot roots down fast.
And… if the new seeds are beneath 1/2” of sand, they might not come thru. If they’re not peeking thru at 14-20 days, I’d say you maybe put them too deep. Then seed again. And buy some tenacity if weeds are threatening to compete too much.
