Lawn care newbie - treat grass first time

Can't afford landscaper any more. I never mowed or took care of a lawn, but I'm all in now.

I picked up a few eGO products such as lawnmower, string trimmer and leaf blower. Eventually I'll get a hedge trimmer. I also picked up a manual core aerator, seed spreader, and "Scotts Turf Builder Weed & Feed3, Weed Killer Plus Lawn Fertilizer, Controls Dandelion and Clover".

I'm in Long Island, NY. I have no idea of grass I have. The lawn is full of dandelions. I'm thinking to use the string trimmer on all weeds and blow it off the lawn. Should I use core aerator next then spread Scotts weed and feed all over? Or, don't aerate yet and use Scotts weed and feed, wait 3-4 weeks aerate then spread grass seed/fertilizer.

Appreciate any advice here. I know it's a learning process, but I want to try and get it right with your help.

Thanks so much!
Jeff

Follow the cool season guide that is stickied above.

pictures of your lawn will help if you post them. I wouldn’t aerate unless you know you have a compaction problem. Your lawn has probably greened up now with the recent heat we’ve had. If you have an active weed problem in the lawn then you could apply the Scott’s product. It’s weed killer and fertilizer but not preventative. Follow the label instructions.

regular cutting to a good height (2.5” is a good target for most), weed and feed, preemergent in the fall and spring. Follow that and you’ll be miles ahead very quickly.

I'm ready to work the lawn now, but I'm still very confused on the first step as I read a lot of conflicting info.

Which is preferably done first? Mow, or weed whack, or spread weed killer???

I read weed killer first so it gets down to the root and wait a couple days before mowing.
Others suggest mowing and/or whack first then apply weed killer.
