Landzie spreaker & Peat Moss Quality

Hi all. I am in the process of a renovation and I was using a Landzie spreader to spread my peat moss after putting out the grass seed. I purchased peat moss from SiteOne, and when I used it in the Landzie i found that about 1/4-1/3 of the peat moss bale was made up of larger chunks that would not pass through the Landzie speader. I had to empty the spreader after every bale and i found the distribution of peat moss was not very good. After I ran out of SiteOne peat moss I picked up some bales from Home Depot and found that peat moss worked great and had very little amount of large chunks (I could run 4-5 bales before I needed to empty it).

Has anyone had similar variation in peat moss quality? As I have a large lawn I need to buy quite a bit of peat moss when doing a reseeding and would prefer to buy many bales at a time, but not if there is this much variation in product. I guess I could try out a few brands to check the quality before doing a large purchase, but I wanted to see if any of you had similar experiences.

Thanks in advance

Absolutely. Around here, I will only buy the Lambert brand from The Mill stores. The quality is outstanding and I've never had a bad batch. Bad peat moss is full of chunks and will give you half the coverage of a quality bale.

Since you have a landzie spreader and a large lawn, I recommend using dry compost from a good bulk supplier. 2 yards is about $75 and will cover 10k sqft with that spreader. It offers many more benefits than peat moss.
