Insecticide Granules After Seeding

Hello all.

I have been meaning to figure out an insect control program but have had so many things on my plate I haven't gotten to it.

I overseeded my back lawn (project area around 12k) this past Friday - 10/6.

I knew I had bugs to deal with at some point. I always see tons of wolf spiders. I also have fire ants and a lot of crickets. I have seen a lot of regular crickets at different times of year but also know that there are a lot of mole crickets. I have found them any time I dig to plant something and even had one sitting next to a sprinkler head puddle the other day.

I always figured these things were a nuisance to me but only recently found out that the mole crickets can actually damage my grass.

When I am out watering it sounds like I'm in the middle of the swamp at midnight. There are so many crickets and they're so loud.

I would like to put something down asap. Preferably granules.

I did a little research so I've seen that that adults are difficult to kill but would it still be worth it to start something now? I've also seen that it's good to have the ground a little wet so that they are closer to the surface. With all of my watering due to the new seed, I figure I've got the water part taken care of.

I can do more planning for spring to make sure I have something in place for prevention and something to kill the "babies" but the idea of having them out there full force right now without anything in place to control them is really worrying me. Especially with new grass about to germinate (I hope!)

Would something like Ortho Bug-B-Gon be worth it to get started asap? Home Depot has the 10 lb bags in stock locally for $8.97. (0.20% Bifenthrin)

Also, Is it safe to put down on new seed/grass? I feel like in my research I've seen people saying yes and no to that so I'm just going to ask here to be sure!

Location info: I'm in Southeast Virginia (Chesapeake) and it won't be getting cold enough around here to kill anything anytime soon.

Thank you and everyone for any help with this!

I'm probably just going to go ahead with this treatment. I also found Bifen L/P online but it's the same % of Bifenthrin and costs more per lb. than the Bug-B-Gon.

The application rates are all over the place. The website I looked at with Bifen L/P said they recommend 2.3lb/1k. So maybe I'll just do that.

The label for the Ortho on Home Depot website says for lawns apply 0.6 - 1.2lbs /k with no mention of what length of coverage that would be time wise but then in the same "for lawns" box also says for season long and 3&6 month control apply 2.3lbs/k.

I'll just do the 2.3lb / k rate and figure that gets me through to spring when I can figure out what to do next.

Hopefully if this is a terrible idea someone will let me know before I do it.

I will try to get to Home Depot tomorrow to pick up a couple of bags. Too bad they don't have the 20lb in stock.

I suppose I'll need 3 10lb bags for that rate.

Unless I'm missing something this $8.97 for 10 lbs of 0.20% Bifenthrin granules seems to be a fantastic price. Every other brand I've checked including the other Ortho ones are 0.1% or. 0.115% and cost the same or more.

If this stuff works maybe I should stock up...

We have rain forecast for this weekend so I'd like to apply before then unless the rainfall looks like it's going to be too heavy... Or I could put it down Friday and lightly water it in with my sprinklers and let the rain do the rest. Maybe then there wouldn't be as much of a risk of a wash out.

Anywho.... That's my plan.

I think that’s the same active ingredient as Sevin. I hate using it since it’s nasty stuff, but I put it down usually 2-3X per year in summer and early fall to control ticks. I’d rather kill all the bugs than have my kids get a tick born illness. It seems to kill just about everything, so if that’s what you are going for, it definitely works.

Yeah I figure I can start out with a clean sweep. lol. Kill it all!

Got it down today and mostly watered in. The rain tomorrow will finish that. Over the winter I'll try to figure out a plan for what I want to do insecticide wise. I also need to get on a decent schedule for the house - inside and outside.

I even bought a beautiful new sprayer. :)
