New home build zoysia lawn deficient in organic matter and CEC, the sand is unable to hold on to nutes. Things look great immediately after fertilizing but quickly fade once we get heavy rain. It’s quite odd to watch happen and to know exactly what’s happening. We brought in a ton of fill and it’s all sand base.

What’s the best/cheapest source of biochar and humic y’all have found? I can keep throwing money away on ferts until thatch and top soil start to build up, or try to amend with something that can hold on to it for longer. Humichar appears to run over $90.00 a bag. I’m on 1ac So all these voodoo potions get expensive quick.

Also, who are y’all using for soil testing? I need to get one done but I’m certain there’s literally nothing in this sand. I’m going to guess CEC is less than 5-6. Prob with soil test now is I had to get something down and hit it with 16-4-8 plus a kick of Ammonium Sulfate 2 weeks later.

Current plan is to grab some slower release fertilizer, kick up the K level, and 4 lbs per 1k HumiChar

I don't think any of that powdered liquid stuff is going to increase CEC by any measurable amount.
$78 for only 6 lbs of material isn't going to do much of anything.

Pretty sure you'd be better off adding compost (and biochar) to increase CEC of your sandy soil.
You can buy bagged biochar/compost blend for $10 for a 30# bag. That will increase your CEC faster than any liquid, but it's not going to be cheap.

Best option is a large supply of cheap (homemade) compost and regular topdressing.

Agreed. Just really trying to avoid top dressing an entire acre with anything but sand to level it. I just requested a quote for command topdressing material so we’ll see. I already spent close to 20k on the fill dirt and leveling the yard before sod. I think I’m gonna go for the humichar at 4lbs per 1k, and monthly fertilizer apps. Working on soil test now. We’re not even in the house yet and the neighbors already think I’m crazy.

‘Diamond R fertilizer plant is close to me and I found decent deals on the 16-4-8

Found this relatively close to me. COMAND | Take COMAND of Your Soil Health

Ya, too late for that but I do like the idea of a test area.

My prob with the humic and biochar is the cost vs constant feeding. I can feed 200lb/acre Diamond R 16-4-8 monthly for 4 months vs the cost for one application of 4lb/1k Humichar , just not sure the data is there to support its benefit at that rate. Fed monthly, the clippings will accumulate and begin to build some organic material and recycle what they took in. The labor involved in topdressing is gonna be absurd, it’s my least fav option. Guess I’ll be buying that ecolawn or turfco top dresser sooner than later.

I can also get Lesco 60% poly plus 16-0-8 for around 25 bucks/50lb, and add 5lb triple super phosphate per 50lb. I’ll wait for soil test to come up with a plan.
