I have been looking at my plugged lawn and im seeing two types of runners coming out of the plugs. I read that zoysia has above ground and underground runners. Im seeing two very different types of runners coming from my plugs but they are both above ground, unless there is a third type. I see a white looking runners with spread out new growth then purple runners with grass blades that are much more dense that the ones on the white runners.

The white colored runner looks like bermuda to me. Purple is definitely the zoysia.
You are kidding me. they are both coming from the same plug. OH boy here I go again. I'm using plugs from my own lawn and I have been told by some people I have Bermuda and other say Zoysia. I guess they are both right.

The lawn i think is looking fantastic its spreading not as fast as SA but its moving, im very excited to see how it will look at the end of this year. Once I have fully recovered zoysia I have another 1000sf of SA that I want to clean out and put down more plugs, but thats next year or maybe later this year it depends how the zoyisa recovers from 3000 plus donor plugs I took and the new growth.

Is it possible it's just two different cultivars of Zoysia? My Empire has purple-ish stolons but I believe Palisades has light green. I'm not so sure you would be able to tell them apart even side by side so I wouldn't worry about it. Once you start seeing seed heads you will be able to confirm one way or the other.
Thanks for the input, anything is possible here, for a year i was trying to kill it and it kept coming back, last year I started to encourage it to grow and spread and this year im using it to plug my whole back yard.

Thats interesting, wow they are so different. The purple one grows very slow but very tight grass blades. The white one grow fast and covers lots of ground but not tight at all.

Corey for now, I will take any grass in my back yard now maybe after its all filled in I will try that. The strange thing is all over my existing grass i dont see the white runners i only need the purple one, its only from the plugs I made from my yard do I see the white runners.

Right now my goal is to have a green solid lawn with no weeds, i love the current donor section, if this mixed grass created that im fine with it. Maybe in the future i may work on getting rid of it, but for now most of the spread is cause of the Bermuda
