Honda starter 'locked'

The GCV160 on my Honda HRB216 mower has failed to start for the first time ever in a peculiar way. It was last used about 6 weeks ago, and all was well.

Instead of turning over freely when I pulled the started cord, there was slack then no movement. Next pull was made slowly and with steady pressure until there was a jerk and slow movement. Several pulls never achieved sufficient speed to turn the motor over fast enough to start. The jerk to get moving occurred on every third or fourth pull.

  • The oil level is fine
  • The starter cord operates smoothly
  • Removing the spark plug made it marginally easier to pull

I am reluctant to remove the pull starter and try doing a drill start because using a sledge hammer to address a symptom can do more harm than good.

Any ideas on what the problem could be are welcome.

What do you mean the starter operates smoothly, but you went in depth about how pulling it caused the jerking motion? The cord spins a little piece with ball bearings. Pulled with speed, they go outward can catch onto the crankshaft and that’s what turns the crankshaft to start. Pulled slow, theres no centrifugal force.

Don’t remove the starter pulley to use a drill, remove it to inspect the gear and see if one of the teeth are broken. If yes, then you replace the $16 part. It’s a 10 minute job.
Sledgehammer?!?

"The cord spins a little piece with ball bearings. Pulled with speed, they go outward can catch onto the crankshaft..."

That is true of the B&S recoils, but the Honda is different.

The problem has been resolved, it was cable stretch of the starter interlock.

Thanks guys, you helped me focus on outside the motor, and check all the things needed to start the motor.
