Granular PGR - How does it work?

I recently saw a granular PGR in a big box store that had 0.15% Trinexapac-ethyl. Most of the time I see this applied in a liquid/foliar application. Does anyone have any knowledge on how the granular product worksI assume via root absorption?

Product Names: Governor G, Slow Mow

I searched and there is an old forum post on this product already but not much discussion on it other than it is expensive in comparison to liquids.

Hoping @Supergrass might chime in on this one.

I used it once or twice before overseeds. I guess class A PGRs have some minor root absorption, just as class B ones have some minor foliar absorption (I think). I can't remember if I wet the grass first in every case, but I know I did most of the times I used it.

The stuff worked. There was no problem with it. It did what it needed to. I think I got a rebate on it, and bought the Bioadvanced version (smaller bag). I haven't used it in a couple of years, and used most of the bag up a couple of years ago. I have a little bit left that I was saving for whatever, who knows when.

I think it would be too expensive to use routinely, but it did what I needed to do for an overseed.

It was easier to measure out a small bit of granular for a small area than try to mix a tiny bit of liquid, for one thing.

Both products have nearly identical labels yet I don’t recall any mention of wet turf. In fact I recall don’t mow 4 hours before and don’t water in being two instructions. But hey if reports are that it works, must be some magic. Maybe some break down vapor that gets into the foliar parts?

Or maybe if you don't wet it, the dew wets it and makes plant crowns absorb whatever hits them? I wondered as well, and don't remember if it said to wet first either. It might not have, like you said.

Head scratcher.

They do state on their website that best practice is to apply in early morning. Im sure they are banking on what you said that dew will transfer the TE to the shoot when dew hits it the following day if it isnt applied in the morning. Seems like a waste to me unless you don't want the neighbors looking at you funny walking back and forth across your lawn with your backpack.

The reviews are mixed; probably with some that over applied and said it hurt their lawns; while others are saying, worked great. I figured I might recommend it to a neighbor who is not an enthusiast, but might be willing to try an easy granular application from the local store. Maybe at a lower rate so when they over apply they are still ok. Keep in mind the person believes watering and fertilizing their bare spots will cause new fescue to grow… so I am tailoring to “easy”.

I saw studies showing that lower rates are almost as good as far as amount of growth suppression, and have virtually no impact on duration (with the liquid). The only thing I'd be concerned about is the rebound phase for a neighbor doing one app. They need to know it will grow extra fast for a few weeks at some point...that the slowdown is temporary, and will double up on growth after because all you're doing is delaying it. Hopefully they'll mow often enough.

If you were thinking about the PGR for an overseed of bare patches, it might work for that purpose. Not sure how it would fit into a standard yard maintenance schedule outside of that.

Was thinking...maybe the neighbor needs a PGS to help the seed go faster, not a PGR. (Not to be confused with PIGS below.)

Also: Do you think PGR with iron actually should be PIG where I stands for iron? E.g. like the saying dressing a PIG with whatever? Some swear by it but I'm skeptical.

Obviously, I am being singled out, as the mention of chat bots has been mentioned in maybe 3-4 other threads. Supergrass is the only one to reach out to me privately as an introduction. The rest making accusations and memes are just plain out rude. I have been careful not to engage because I know people are going to think whatever they want to think.

I am an IT engineer professional, and I do not use chatGPT or any other form of ai/language model. I do know what it is because I do follow the news and it is related to my profession and industry. As a generally smart guy in technology, I like to share my knowledge, abilities, and experience. Part of this is learning and knowing it well enough to teach it. I just got started into diving deep into lawn care in the past year and that is way than enough time for me to watch plenty of videos, read many of the forums, and Google plenty of information. I have personally applied what I learned from various sources using my limited resources (as in I don't have tons of land to test things nor extra $ to burn). Many of the things I respond to challenge me because if I don't know the answer, I am one to go find out. Nothing that the original posters couldn't have done themselves. Maybe that is too much or too hard; not everyone is into reading research papers.

I suspect people are suspicious of me recently joining and posting so much. Yeah, I have time to answer, and most is done on my phone. Just because I active/OCD and passionate does not mean I am fake. Review my posts - they are edited for typos and grammar or adding additional information. I have screenshots or pictures from my phone in some of them. I do not believe I have given any bad advice - I might as well have just copied and pasted the answers in the forum stickies.

Now I see Green here beginning to speak in riddles - which is a much better test than just blatantly accusing someone. Most new visitors don't seem to mind and I hope find my replies genuinely helpful. It seems older members are the ones upset - If anyone has any additional doubts, you can AMA me via real time conversation and I'll talk to you over a phone or teams, etc. However, if unreasonable accusations make this environment unfavorable, I see no reason to stick around where I am not wanted. I am not getting paid to be here and I'm donating my time, so I have no problem leaving if that will put people at ease.

Oh yeah - this post/thread was not fake. I wanted to know and find out... so I bought the bag of Slow Mow.

@secured2k

Thank you for assuring me you're not using any automation to write your posts. I had a suspicion that you might be in some cases, but other posts were very casual. I'm always skeptical when someone joins out of nowhere and starts posting at a high rate with a lot of detail and high word counts. It's nothing personal. I'm sure as an IT pro, you're used to vetting that people are acting legitimately.

I knew I would eventually find out one way or the other what your method of posting was. As you said, there are ways to tell, and you just passed the test. If anyone is still skeptical at this point, they don't understand technology or are thinking of sci-fi stuff.

Thanks again for assuring me you have been writing your posts on your own. One of the first things I did here today when this all came to a head was to look back at your previous posts. Nothing really stood out. Care to share a little more about your writing style, though? It's interesting.

Keep up the good work, and thanks for showing you are just a regular person typing your own answers.

Also...you won't be the last who people suspect. I predict this is going to happen over and over. Hopefully we can add your detection expertise for the next time it happens.

I'm sorry I had to do what I did above. It was the last straw.

Seriously though...

Are you sure your neighbor needs a PGR?

There is seed treated with PGS (not PIGS, lol!) if it's just a few spots and having to mow too soon is the problem. I've never used it. But I wasn't kidding about it. Might be something to look into.

To me, PGR requires a commitment.

Speaking of commitments: I've suggested to various new members when they were new: start a journal here. It's one of the best things you can do!

No, he is just envious because most everyone else’s lawn in filling out and his has some bare spots. He wanted to know what I was doing. He wasn’t going to go spraying, but did consider spreading granular products.

I am aware of PGS, I have a product or two that can be applied after the fact as a fertilizer to do the same. I looked into it with seeds when I saw someone here recommend a seed called Artimuss. This was a past learning/research moment for me.

His issue is soil compaction and erosion… and probably tree roots. But he just shares his story of his father tending to the land and garden so he just wants to water it and thinks it will grow.
He has listened to me to get this corrected this fall; before I recommend the PGR, I had to test it for myself… I like to stand behind my recommendations and work. Sadly the lawn care company doesn’t mow every week, their blades are dull, and the owners are not like me mowing it myself. I figured if we could keep his lawn shorter and thicker/filled out in the future, it could help against the lawn care company’s issues.

I get having a journal but I already keep it in a calendar app right now. They are basic notes I can check when I last applied something.

Thank you. I get it about the high rate, but compared to my past work it was actually low. Years ago in support we had tons of questions from regular users and usually this resulted in many more replies. Eventually those did become copy and pasted of known answers/stickies… but that was a 9-5 job.

I’m not sure what you mean by sharing my style? Maybe more about me?
I grew up with my family in a country area in agriculture and farming crops (corn, tobacco, general vegetables); much was done with hard labor and large machinery. I left what I learned behind because I moved to places where the landscaping was managed for me. I got back into lawn care because the lawn care company did the bare minimum and I wanted green grass in the summer. Had tons of weeds, poor soil with rocks and heavy clay, and Bermuda grass mixed in with tttf. Previous owners neglected the area and it was a literal jungle of vines and trees in the rear.

It gets hot in VA so I was considering keeping Bermuda or switching to zoysia but this winters’ test said no to the brown grass. In my previous picture, my phone is sitting on one of 7 planters where I grew different zoysia to see how they handled the cold. Results so far, Zenith and Innovation Zoysia are doing pretty well.

As For my style with posts; you had one I replied to about Anuew. Engineering mindset is for me to look at the technical documentation. I open another tab and pull up the pdf and review what I don’t first-hand recall. I have previously seen the videos (YouTube) about Anuew vs Poa triv, and have previously went googling for anyone with results or research. Since I haven’t tried it or know some trusted definitive answers, I couldn’t give you a definitive answer; just a discussion point. However if I did know or if I researched and found some reputable information, I might summarize it to keep it simple. For those looking for more details, I’ll reply with screenshots and sources.

I feel I need to continue the AI (it is not AI!) conversation in one of the other threads. The comments made by some such as yourself are very valid points and a concern to me too. One of my coworkers was using chatgpt3 for actual working code!

Sorry, I clarified writing style in an edit after I posted. But you started to touch on it above. The background was helpful, too.

We should continue that AI/chatbot discussion as you suggested. There's already a topic about it.

Here though, in this discussion, AI means something else.

By the way, the "test" post above about PIGS was a reference to the saying: lip gloss or makeup on a pig...if anyone didn't get it. Some have called FAS plus PGR that, and I used the concept to try to disconfirm the bot theory that some of you brought up. In science, we can't confirm anything, but we can disconfirm things. It never fails! That would have tripped up any automated responses if anyone was using them. (These things take a little creativity but are doable. I'm the same person who used to get automated telemarketers/scammers to end the pre-recorded scripted replies, and to come on and actually start talking.)

Ok, I've pigged out a little much this evening. Going offline now.
