I have Sundancer Buffalograss and live in Midwest. June is the first month suggested by the extension office for fertilizing buffalograss lawns, and a 4-1-2 ratio is recommended, the best one I am seeing is 16 4 8 from The Andersons on Amazon but a 40lb bag is $90! I have approximately 35k sqft I'd like to drop fertilizer on but I really don't want to break the bank doing so. In some old posts the product called Carbon Earth New BalX 16-4-8 looked like the best bang for buck but now it seems to be obsolete/discontinued? I am not near big box stores, so my selection is limited to what is available to order online.
Also, I have read that I should be using slow release nitrogen for buffalograss but also that buffalograss responds better to fast release nitrogen? Anyone care to weigh in on this? General consensus is that waiting until June is best so weeds don't benefit as much from the fert, and that the fertilizer helps with both keeping the grass green and stolen growth but still helps out weeds as well.
