I'm creating a journal for my front yard renovation. Nomix sod was installed in the end of spring 2019. By now it has had 3 overseedings with mostly TTTF. I am seeding with 100% KBG next month so I can reel mow in the front. Only about 474sqft will remain TTTF, while 1326sqft will be in the reno.

My intended seed down date will be about a month away. Until then, I will (barely) have the ugliest front lawn in the neighborhood 😆. I have everything I need to nuke it, except a new bottle of Tenacity.

After I spray Roundup and begin fallowing, I will assess if I want to bring in compost. No topsoil is needed. The lawn is pretty flat minus one small area. Future topdressing will be required with sand.

Here is a picture from 2019:

Some already do. I am the "neighborhood lawn nazi" after all. Lunar, Bluebank and Mazama KBG. Lunar is the only variety I don't have in the backyard. My last renovation was about 2.25lbs/k of seed. I am aiming for 2.50lbs/k this time around. If any washout, I will have over 1.50lbs of seed leftover, plus the old SS1100 from before.

Sprayed Killz-All, 11oz worth. Standing out front to direct people away until it dries. I used a cheap throw away sprayer. Next round I'll fill a spray bottle to get near the shrubs. I sprayed a plant I'm pulling (the sprinkler hits it).

I will put 3-4# of seed per bag, zip tie the end to allow for movement, don't overfill the bag The larger ones work well for this. I do the change water every 12 hours, making sure to use the water when it runs cold from the hose, don't use the hot water sitting in the sun at the end of the day. I keep them in the shade and covered. One year I brought them inside since there was a heat wave. It stinks bad those first days. I also tumble the bags thoroughly when in the bucket. After two days, you don't need a brick on top of them. I'll drop the bags on the driveway on seed down day to smash the water out of the bag after draining for 10 minutes until the wet spot is minimized. Then mix with milo material 4:1, basically using 5-gallon buckets and pouring amounts back and forth. Easy peasy. Actually, it's a lot of work. I've done 5 and 6-days, though my seed has been TTTF w/ 7%KBG blend.

Sprayed Killz-All again with 11oz. Just about 1.25gal of water. Went over some areas twice. See how it looks come late next week then start mowing low and dethatching.

I put the pump wand on the right side, I'm left handed. Not much pressure with manual sprayers. For the most part the sprayed areas are crispy dead.

Week of the 21st will be dedicated to doing all of the necessary prep work of getting rid of dead grass.

I do need some topsoil by the sidewalk, about 10sqft. Also the walkway to the porch will need slight re-grading (I will put 6a stone and a border there) between two sprinkler heads.

The plan is to wrap a collar all the way around (mowed at 2.50"-3.25"), with one or two passes using the Timemaster nearest the sidewalk. I really only use the Recycler on the parkway or leaf cleanup now.

Sprayed Killz-All again with 11oz. This should be the second to last spray. Rain tomorrow thru Sunday so I'll scalp it when I can. Little bits of green poking thru, hit those spots and triple sprayed what big areas remained.

I find that the yellow caution tape keeps looky-loos and kids on bikes away when I spray. Most likely I will tape off the whole lawn when I drop seed, keep it up til I'm ready to mow it. So looking forward to bringing the Greensmaster out front.

Going to be a busy weekend mowing lower and dethatching. Watching the extended forecast, might be a thunderstorm in early August so I will plan accordingly.

If I remember my last renovation, irrigation should be 9am, 11:30, 1pm, 3, 5 and 7pm at first for two minutes. Then dropping the 7pm time to run the last cycle around 5-5:30. Thinking of going at a rate of 2.5lbs/k for seeding.
