I'm trying to lay gravel in tow different areas of my back yard for the first time and have some questions.

1. After raking the dirt, flattening it with a tamper and leveling, is it a requirement to lay a stone base of crushed rock BEFORE you lay down the lanscaping/weed fabric? OR is the stone base layer not needed, and you can lay landscape fabric on top of the flattened/leveled dirt?

2. One of the area I wish to lay gravel is pretty deep, +6" up against the brick patio. Will I have to do something different to fill an area that is this deep? Maybe use a stone base for this section so I'm not using so much expensive gravel rock? Plus, looking at the pictures below, should I put up 2x4's against the fence so nothing spills into my neighbors home?

Area 1, 6" deep, ~65sqft

Area 2 - 3" deep - ~70 sqft

Appreciate any helps or tips! First time laying gravel!

For gravel and not pavers, you don't have to put down a base. Fabric would be good to prevent your gravel from intermingling with the soil over time and would be easier to remove if you (or anyone else) decides to take it out.

You don't necessarily have to fill up to your patio's height , but I believe 3-4 inch is standard to get good coverage. I would be more focused on grading your dirt and tamping it away from your house.

Yes, I think putting an edging along your fence would tie everything in, making it neater, and of course, keeping any erosion from going into your neighbor's yard. I would do cedar or PT pine.
