Hi guys,

I am newbie in lawn care, I am fm Toronto Ontario Canada, I never had a lawn to take care before until 2 years ago….

I been having hard time to make my lawn look healthy especially though the hot summers, I am now sick and tired to see my lawn struggling every year (new sod in in 2023 KBG,tttf,p.rye, creeping red fescue, 2 different sections of about 1000sq.ft. each, Both of FULL sun, no shade at all).

I read the “cool season lawn guide”, very educative, but still I need some help/recommendations about how to properly fertilizer my lawn thought the year with dosage/product/etc, so feel free to correct me and my math, still no quite sure about it.

I would like to use the fertilizer from Scotts (I know this is the “wrong” one, bc is hard to control the spreader dosage, etc. but I still have 2 full bags+ of it and I don’t want to waste it, also Urea and AMS are very hard to get it, where I am located and even more fungicides/herbicides).

What I planning to use, at least for this season is:

Scotts green max 27-0-2 with 5%iron / bag size: 41.7 lbs cover 12500sq.ft./ bag recommendations dose 3.33lb\1000sq.ft. every 6/8weeks *for my calculation is about 0.90 lb of N per 1k sq.ft.??

Math: 41.7/12,5=3.336lbs of product/1k sq.ft

3.336\*27=0.90 lb of N per 1000sq.ft

Can I divide it to do GRANULAR spoon feeding application??

For example for 0.25lb of N every 2 weeks from May to early June:

Math: 41.7\*0.27= 11.259 tot. N in bag

1.0/0.27=3.70lb of product for 1lb of N per 1000sq.ft.

3,70lb product /4 bi-weekly applic.= 0.93lb of granular product for 0.25lb of N for every application on 1k sq.ft.???

Again,Not sure if this make sense and or doable….

Also how many lb of N in granular form I can put down every 2 weeks without damaging the lawn???

Can I put down bi-weekly 0.50 or even better 0.75 lb of N without damaging the lawn?

Can I melt this fertilizer in warm water and spray it for leaf application, like urea/AMS?

My goal is to put down in total 4 pound of N in the all season, and do 1 week spoon feeding of N of the other week spray some Green Envy,Sea kelp, and light dose of chelated iron.

Any other product that you guys suggest to add on the foliar application with kelp,G.envy, iron???

FYI: the last season I only fertilized using bag instructions from the scotts max green and Scotts fall, obviously not enough NPK! see picture of the status of my grass right now, probably still waking up from the winter, but everybody else around me have already a decent green, temp today 7 degrees C.

FEEL FREE TO CORRECT ME ON ANY OF THIS…

You got irrigation for this lawn?

If you are going with Scott's then follow the label, you got a mixed lawn so if you are in the recommend rates you should be fine.

If the fertilizer is slow release then it won't disolve in water easy.

Get urea from animal feed store and disolve that, just go easy with it since it's quite strong.

I go to the sod folks and ask them what they used and how often. They might even have it on there website.

Yes I do have irrigation, but they are still off, the snow just melt 2 weeks agò and temps where still a little lower,we had a very late spring this year in Toronto, Canada

Do you know how to identify on the back of the bag how much is slow release or fast release?

To me it looks like your lawn is still dormant. What I would do is hold off on the fertilizer atm, but instead clean up the lawn. Mow low and bag clippings, dethatch then bag mow again to get all the debris off. A soil test would be nice because if your low in ph now would be a good time to apply it.

Then look at pre-emergents without N either spray or granular not sure your ground temps there but i like to get this down by soil temp of 50.
Once the turf turns green you can start to fertilizer apps

Me personally , I would wait a little longer before doing anything. Your grass is fairly young and should not have a significant amount of thatch at 2 1/2 years old. Go buy your PreM and put it down. The ground temp seems good for that. If you want to get out there and do something do a spring clean up of any leftover leaves give it a light hand rake to fluff it up and get some air in there before putting down the preM. Nothing major or mechanical. Dethatching now may take out good grass that is just sleeping. I agree with the others that it is just still dormant. Give it a chance to do it's thing until your daytime temps are around 60*F regularly. My KBG is slow to take off and then when the temps are right it starts to go, around mid May for me down on Long Island, NY. That's just my opinion though, there are many others here with more knowledge than I.
