Fall Leaves & Overseeding

Hello,

I'm planning out my Fall overseeding (first time as a new homeowner). Our area of the neighborhood has a ton of big oak and maple trees, and the leaves from mid-October to mid-November come down like crazy and basically cover the yard every few days. Obviously, this would be an issue for any new grass growing, both because of the leaves covering the seeds from getting sun, and having to go out onto the lawn to clean up the leaves (we had to hire a landscape company to come once a week because there were so many, and we couldn't keep up). Anyway, I'm trying to plan out the best time to throw down seed, and the heavy leaf cover is throwing a wrench in the works.

Right now the plan is to use a mix of TTTF and KBG (~90%/10%). Could I overseed in late August or early September here in NJ when the temps could still be in the 80's/90's (although, this would be more of a 1-2x per week thing during that time of year)? That would probably give me about 6 weeks before the leaves really started to come down.

The Titanium 2LS TTTF seed from Hogan https://21b9cb9d-3ba6-4d9e-8ba1-b4a...-8ba1-b4a3e6a9fb83.filesusr.com/ugd/bb20f6_1b3b99c52b774732b9e890a05fc51338.pdf , for example, says it prefers soil temps around 55-60, but that would probably be a bit later in the Fall, right?

Or am I overthinking this?

overthinking it. throw it down in early sept. Soil temp is more critical that air temp. I would venture a guess that by sept you have lower ground temps and will be fine. Give the seed a good month to germinate before leaf fall. The height of the rest of your grass will shade out just as much as leaves would. The other grass is going to be growing at that time.

Hey Mike - late Aug / early September is probably the perfect time to seed in your location. I'm Southeast PA, so probably similar to you. Also surrounded by lots of trees and get plenty of leaves by October. Those 80/90 degree days will speed up germination. The key will be having proper irrigation to keep the seeds moist and then the young grass going in the warmer temps. Last year I put tall fescue down Labor day weekend and was mulching leaves into the yard by October.

good luck!

I have a 45-foot Blue Oak in my backyard and that thing is shedding something almost year round; leaves, acorns, flower bud things, whatever. 99% of it ends up in my pool, of course, but the rest just covers the lawn every couple days like you mentioned. It was a massive task to keep everything cleaned up, especially when it was leaves. I've been trying to figure out if there were an easier way than rake/pick up every couple days, and I found that leaf vacuum/mulchers exist!

I've had my eye on the Worx WG509 for probably a month now, but didn't feel like dropping $180 on it. Then last night when I was poking around, I got a CCC notification that it dropped to $99 and I snagged one. I have no idea how well these work, but maybe it would help you out? Looking forward to trying mine out this week.

@cleohioturf Awesome, thanks! Will proceed with throwin' down in late summer with confidence.

@Dan1234 Excellent. Good to know from someone in a similar climate. How's the TTTF holding up in the shade? Is it 100% TTTF? I don't have irrigation set up yet, but I think I'm going to try to set up something like Ryan Knorr used. He basically used to have in-ground sprinkler heads, but mounted on a spike and connected several together with hoses that are fairly easy to move around.

@spaceman_spiff Dudddeee, these oaks are crazy. Just got finished with them dropping what I'm deeming "tree-****s". Those wispy pollen-y string thingies that drop everywhere. I had to break out the leaf blower to gather them up and raked them into a huge ball to dispose of. That Worx leaf sucker looks sweet! Would love to have one, but I question how much the bag would hold. I feel like it could fill up really quickly. Let me know how it works out - I may need to get one if you give it a good review!

LOL tree ****s. Spot on.

I still have a bunch of leaves from last fall under some shrubs and whatnot. I'll try to remember to let you know what I think of the Worx mulcher later this week. I have no doubt the bag will fill up fairly quickly. We have two green-waste cans that get picked up every other week. When the oak is going full production, I count down the hours until it's pickup day

@spaceman_spiff Sounds good thanks! Ha, seeing the new leaves come in the past month or so is already giving me flashbacks of dealing with the leaf tsunami this past fall...

@thin_concrete LOL damn tree ****s. The worst. Nice! Sounds exactly like what I'll be doing. I'm also going to aerate. I did the screwdriver test the other day and definitely have a good deal of soil compaction going on in the yard.

@mikegryo - I actually don't have too much shade anymore and get plenty of sun, but I'm mostly surrounded by large trees on neighboring houses that end up in the yard. I used a DIY irrigation set-up too. Used a sprinkler timer that could connect 4 houses and put two sprinklers on each hose run. It's a pain to set up, but once its up and running its great.

PSA, please don't look up "tree ****s" on your favorite search engine in an effort to figure out what's being discussed in this thread 😂
