I’m just across the border in Jersey. It’s getting hot again this week but the night time temps in the 50’s are pulling down temps quickly. I just dropped preemergent, fertilizer, seed, some topsoil fill (dogs dug holes), and weed control. Not all in the same areas of course. I had held back on weed control due to temps. The dog just got spayed and has a two week no swimming so I could do the seeding in the pool area without having dogs in there. The ‘minimal input’ yards got preemergent and fertilizer (about 3/4#) to start things up for the fall. I was going to aerate and topdress but I’ve run out of time to do it all so I went to the pre-m. Still have one more 4k sqft plot for fertilizer and preemergent. I think it’s going to be tenacity and spot seeding also, but not sure.

 

We don’t really like using chemicals so I’ve only ever really done seed and topsoil (first home, moved in April) and was filling in holes from previous owners pets. At this point definitely a good amount of weeds, but overall healthy green looking yard with some spots of yellow. So I’ve seeded a bit and just watering by hand

 

Time is now for seed/overseeding. I overseeded a shady section last weekend. Pre-emergent was applied Aug 2. (not in the overseed section).

I do not aerate. It isn't needed.

A wakeup (0.3 lb N) was applied last week. Heavier N next week but depends on weather forecast.

 

What seed did you use?

 

I found some tall fescue / ryegrass mix on amazon really cheap. I do plan to level and renovate this entire area next year. This area has issues with soil erosion/ level with mostly Poa Triv / Annua. The summer and my dog have not been kind to this area.

 

Berks county here. Doing a full front yard renovation this year. Dropped seed last Tuesday, and just got germination yesterday. Paying close attention to my watering schedule the next few days...tomorrow's high is 87, Wednesday is 93. Back to high 70s after that.

 

I'm located right over the bridge in South Jersey. At the moment, I am applying Lawn Tonic (the old school lawn spray), and waiting for temps to dip a bit before I start my fall lawn work.

My game plan
1. cut lower / dethatch and scarify
2. aerate
3. throw down some Turf Type Tall Fescue
4. throw down some top soil
5. if the weed pressure gets rough, I'll spot spray, but certainly will throw down some PreM in spring
