Does anyone paint their grass?

Just read an article in the WSJ about the growing popularity of painting their lawn. And it seems to imply it’s actually a common practice on golf courses especially televised ones.

now I’m curious howthis community reacts? Is it an open secret? Is it overrrated? Admittedly I’m intrigued

I looked at it "YEARS AGO" as an add-on service for customers that wanted a green lawn when we were getting lots of frost browning the grass. The product was expensive (golf courses can afford it with what they charge you to play). I approached some customers to see if they would be willing to pay to have it done, all said too much money for something that lasts 3 to 5 weeks and needs redone.

I have noticed it around golf courses I have played at. On greens, I always just assumed that they mixed marking dye with fertilizer when applying treatments, and I don't think it occured to me that they were intentionally coloring it until I read this thread. Also this past winter I noticed it at a golf course on the lawn near the entrance/parking lot to the club. I guess it looked ok, but it was kind of awkward given the color was a bit artificial and much of the grass on the fairways was all dormant.

This is a silly question but I'm assuming they formulate this yard paint to not be damaging to the grass right? I don't see how any sort of paint wouldn't be at least a little bad for it, but I guess if it's just dormant turf in the winter than painting the dead scruff on top couldn't be too bad.
