Dirt Patches in Lawn that Won't Grow

I'm trying to help my mother troubleshoot dirt patches in her backyard lawn. It is a south facing lawn in Arlington (Dallas-Fort Worth), Texas. The parts of the lawn that grow seem to do just fine. But the dirt patches never seem to be able to sustain grass. She said she tried planting sod but the grass just died. (I'm not sure what kind of sod she planted.) There is a large pecan tree in the middle of the lawn near where the largest dirt patch is. The smaller dirt patch has a smaller peach tree next to it. The larger dirt patch lies near the bottom of the slightly downsloping backyard which unfortunately ends at her concrete patio. Therefore, the patio gets flooded with mud when it rains a lot.

My first guess was that she needs a more shade-tolerant grass sod for those dirt patches but I wanted to check with you all here to see if there are other things she need to consider and try? If it is just a matter of trying a different type of sod, what do you recommend?

Thank you!

That looks like St Augustine, so you won't find a more shade tolerant warm season grass type. She might be able to get a more shade tolerant St Augustine cultivar, but it looks like the shade needs to be addressed by thinning out the tree. She might be able to get fescue to grow there, but the color and texture differences are going to look pretty rough.
