Choosing the right size sprayer capacity

Just wondering what everyone suggests for sprayer capacity?

I am going to be getting a Ryobi sprayer because I have both 18V and 40V tools already. I have approx 2000sqft of total lawn (front and back). What I'd like to avoid is having to do multiple tank re-fills if possible.

Is there a recommend size/1000sqft? I can get a 1gallon or 2 gallon hand held, or a 4 gallon backpack sprayer.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

The general rule is that you want 1 gallon of carrier(water) per 1ksqft. Doing one tank mix is better than having to stop and mix 4 different times. The time saved is substantial.

Also consider your back. Lifting and walking around with 4g (+33lb) is not trivial with age.

For the OP with 2K of turf, I would do as Ware suggests and get the 4-gal backpack. True, 1 gal/M is the most common carrier rate for spraying, but with most fungicides (xylem/upward mobile systemics, or contact) it can help if you bump up the carrier to 2 gal/M for more thorough wetting/coverage of the leaf tissue on typical cool season lawns mowed at >3".

No way I'd use a 4-gal backpack for a 16K lawn. Ain't got time for that.
I can cram 4.4 gal into my 4-gal backpack which works out to 0.8 gal/M onto my 5.5K without having to refill, and it works "okay" for most things. But even with only 5.5K I'm thinking about a pusher with a bigger tank to bump up the carrier. For me, having to refill makes spraying less enjoyable and more like actual work.

@dksmc

There are many good sprayers out there so I won't crash your thread.

Only thing I would highly recommend for you as you start this journey is to plan on having the TeeJet nozzles ready to go day 1 when you get around to spraying. They will take any sprayer to a whole new level of precision and accuracy.

There is a highly informative thread on the nozzles on this forum. There are also a lot of guys on YouTube showing them off.

Happy Spraying!

I have an Earthway S15 collecting dust. I loved their 2170 spreader, but that push sprayer was horrible. The wheel drives the pump to spray, and it never wanted to roll freely. The wheel would slide across the wet grass causing it to not spray evenly. Multiple calls to Earthway and apparently that's normal. I went with a 4gal battery backpack and never looked back. It seemed good in theory, but in my experience I'm much happier with a backpack than the S15. I think a push sprayer with an electric pump would be the ticket and would eliminate the issue I had.

Thanks everyone. It sounds like the 4g backpack is the way to go. I was leaning that way anyway. Now the question is 18V or 40V... More research!
Get the 18v from DTO. Their ''factory blemished'' is essentially retail as HD, but termed as such to sell on their own site. They did have the refurbed 4 gallon for under $100last I checked, but I think it comes and go. I never had any issues with their refurbed tools and they come looking brand new.

Switch it to a battery pump.

I was looking at a 2.5 gallon sprayer from flozone for my 2k lawn but for 20.00 extra I will be getting a 4 gallon. I know it's over kill but I'll probably be treating my neighbors yards also. So the extra 1.5 may come in handy plus if I ever move to a house with a bigger yard I'll be ready.
