Hi everyone,

Awesome forum. Thanks for allowing me to join :D
I live in Sydney, Australia.

I am new to dedicated lawn care, I have honestly just done the old run of the mill stuff my entire life really...mow when long, water, odd WEED N FEED , hope and pray.

I inherited this lawn in 2017 and it was a jungle fest...I hand removed all the weeds(Sillyness Level - 983 :bd: ) and since then I have just pretty much continued to mow, water and weed, with no real fertilization to speak of.

I have not laid down any sort of Herbicides/Pre-emergent, top-soil ever.(Did I just say "ever"...SHOCK and HORROR  )

What I am hoping to achieve/understand:
  • Looks like I have Buffalo/St Augustine? Am I right?
  • Its the 1st of Winter here (1 June), what can I do now for this lawn for Winter? Is is to late to do anything?
  • What can I do now which will have Spring and Summer benefits?
  • I have noticed in some of the shady parts along the fence some fungus...any recommendations?
  • I have also what I think is Crab grass running riot in some areas(most, if not all of the brown areas in the pics are dormant/dead Crab grass...I think), how do I get on top of these bad boys?

I have attached some(okay quite a few) images for reference.
Excuse the edging, I trimmed and tidied after pics were taken :) as I had sprayed some Weed n Feed 2 days prior.

Any thoughts and advice would be appreciated :)

Thanks!

Hi @CenlaLowell , thanks for the response!

Re. grass, if you wish I can take more close up pics in order to help identify?

Re. pic 6 and 8, I have a few of those clumps which I will dig out. There aren't too many. I suppose the chemicals you mention are target these and avoid future appearances?

I will research some similar chemicals and mention them here soon.

I live South of you.

Looks like mostly sapphire or sir walter buffalo.

Lightly rake the dead grass out in the back yard.

pic 3 left - kill with hortico buffalo weed killer
pic 8 centre - kill with roundup
pic 23,24,25,26 blanket spray with hortico buffalo weed killer

An application of Seasol for the the roots of the grass and soil would be good now.

Wait 2 weeks and see how the weeds are going.

Not sure what he can do. I know Iodosulfuron is available in AU as Destiny Turf Herbicide. Iodosulfuron is what makes Celsius do what it does. Saw the price for it as well. Wow.
Yes the price of that is uhm...cough cough ouch!
Not sure if Australian law even permits consumers to have it. In the US, the statement "for use by commercial applicators" is a suggestion that an individual state may or may not enforce. I happen to be in a state where that statement is binding. To the point where a vendor within the state is legally liable for selling such products to non commercial users.

Heya @Buffalolawny ,

Thanks for getting in touch!
Thank you for the advice and suggestions, I will definitely head over to Bunnings and grab the above mentioned and report back!

Hi Everyone,

Just for context, it is winter here in Australia 😊

I've applied some weed killer as recommended above and started to see some yellowing of some the nasty stuff.

I will take some pics tomorrow and share.

I also would like to know does anyone know what this is (pic attached) and how best to remove them?

I'm currently removing them by hand a few 10's at a time...is this a futile or worthwhile effort? Or is there something chemical that targets this particular type of thing and would save me from early onset arthritis!

Thanks in advance!

It's hard to tell with no seed heads and it being in Australia but I'm sure that's one of the nasties (Dallis, barnyard, or similar). I'd continue pulling them as you are doing (a couple dozen at a time). You'll have the whole yard clear by summer.

Thanks @Buffalolawny .

I will check into doing this.

Based on your earlier feedback I have some report back images to share...

Should I consider a second dose in a week or two?
As there are still some weeds that are going strong even after the application?

I have taken to removing some of those big clumps by hand from the back yard...there are still a couple left...will do the front in the coming weekends. I know you recommended you using roundup in them but they just irritated all hell outta me 😂 so I went all Resident evil on them.

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to show some of the progress, if I can call it that...

I've removed the clumps of grass(Dallis grass) that was there along with the other ones(not sure of their name).

1. Before (the area to the top right)

1. After (same top right area)

Obviously hoping for some growth in that area but with it being winter doubt it...would it be worth getting a roll or two of Buffalo grass and putting it in there now?
