Hey everyone

Question for you all.

I have a lot of leaves and pines falling right now. I've been looking at buying a billy goat to make it easier on me. Wanted to see if it's worth it.

Are there another alternatives? (Except manually raking)

I have used a couple different systems for my leaf collection. It is a bear in my backyard as I have currently 12 hardwoods and a privacy fence so it all just gets trapped, plus some leaves that never belonged to me.

The first piece of equipment I ever got was a Troy Bilt vac shredder. It worked okay but was honestly a pain in the rear to operate because the wheel setup was really bad, regular lawnmower wheels on a much heavier piece of equipment with a giant bag. I did like that it had a 10:1 shred function.

The leaf vac I have now is a Billy Goat MV650. It will suck up anything and the wheel arrangement is much nicer but it has no shredding action to speak of- just an impeller. Whatever area the leaves are when they go into the impeller is the area that comes out, no reduction whatsoever. But because it's easier to operate with the larger wheels I suspect I'll keep it.

I don't know what it will do with pine tags. They really don't have any area to speak of and probably won't react to suction. No worries at all about leaves though, even wet ones, the Billy Goat will get them up.

I borrowed a Billy Gost (or maybe it was a Little Wonder) vac once. It worked okay, but at the time it was one of those things that would take up way too much space for the amount of time I would need to use it. So like MasterMech suggested, I just used my rotary mower with bag for cleanup duty.

Disregard my last post... when I heard Billy Goat I was thinking of the power rake.

couldn't you change the wheels? To make it easier?

Billy Goats work great, but the unspoken problem with them is the size of the bag. I finally figured out that, because I have to bag everything, you can only fill it about halfway before it needs to be emptied. Otherwise, it's b__ch to manhandle. They do also take up a massive amount of space.

You can also order, eBay it probably easiest, a screen that will install in the impeller chamber and create reduction in the bagged debris.

I did look at that first, the Troy Bilt needed wider and taller wheels which
1) would not have fit without completely reorganizing the deck and handle bar arrangement
2) would have thrown off the geometry of the nozzle.

That's why I like the Billy Goat; it's designed with adequate wheels in mind

I picked up an almost new Craftsman 4.5hp yard vacuum/chipper/shredder for $60 late last summer. It works ok for my small yard, can't imagine using it on 10k sqft or more. The bag is definitely the biggest drawback, fills up quick and isn't fast or easy to empty.
Agreed if you try and do the entire yard walking it. I usually blow all the leaves into one giant pile or several piles and then I can simply suck and shred all the leaves in one spot with the barrel right next to me.
