Yes, I seeded Saturday, 3 days ago, and sure enough the 4ths are germinating this morning...I just threw the seed down on the bare spots and covered them with peat moss, watered twice daily.... Had some overnight rain.... Should be a good test on their shade tolerance in 2 months, my most shady area....

 

Here is the 4th Mil. on the 5th, 1 week to the day of seeding...Most are about 2 inches high already...Now this is in a mostly shady area that always thins out in Summer...Will see what happens....

 

I have had 4th Millenium for 4 years as zero signs of any ability to spread. I personally dont believe any of these so called Rhizomatous Tall Fescue spread at all.

 

Well, I'm not seeing things, here is today's picture of my test pot started exactly 1 month ago.( Look under my "Test Pot" Thread)..I did not add any more seed...I am also seeing spreading of the 4th along my mower wheel edge that I did not add any further seed and couldn't get any other seed types including KBG to take and fill in...

 

I suspect you are seeing aggressive tillering vs actual spreading via rhizomes. Rhizomatous varieties of TTTF do produce rhizomes, but they are fairly short compared to what KBG can do. 4th M and some other varieties tiller very quickly to fill in and repair, though.

 

Yea I think we are talking a lot smaller spreading vs the paper plate of KBG. Can't beat that low input and still looking good though.

 

Well I don't care if it's tillering or rhizomes, all I know is it is filling in and it is a good looking grass, color, growing quickly, and as long as it survives, I'm sold on it....

 

Oh no doubt. I love TTTF and used rhizomatous varieties exclusively for years. Great color and can tolerate some serious abuse!

 

I have a mix of spreading tall fescue in a section I had to repair from a pool install. It's about 36%4th millennium planted during COVID. Spreading no aggressive tillering yes. Fungus pressure extremely high.

 

yeah, if it is 4" high right now I'd be dropping it to 3 for now. You want to keep it a little shorter until all of it is growing into that 3" bracket. Then let it all grow out to your desired HOC if higher.

 

Pretty well any KBG is gonna sprout and pout as they say. That’s why with KBG the general guidance is to start frequent mowing once it hits 1.5-2” and get the N blitz going pretty quick too. Get it in gear quickly.

 

I had to re-seed mine multiple times for it to fully cover the area.
It's having a somewhat hard time now because of all the heat.
