A week ago I dropped the hoc from 3/8" down to 1/4"and gave the rye-muda a nice low spring clean out clean up. During the past week, my hood saw 3 different rain systems roll thru dropping almost 1 inch of rain total.

The current spring rye-muda blend is in slow transition with more of the muda medley waking up. 10 day Forecast shows 🌞 sunny and increasing temps to the mid and upper 90's next week. The rye will continue to keep phasing itself out. :geek:

So today I raised the hoc back up to 3/8" and gave the yard a cut. I'm going to try and keep this cut height for a while in hopes of giving some advantage to any possible hybrid that may exist. As temps hit consistent mid 90s, I'll probably have to raise the hoc, and again once we start our non-stop highs in the 100's, 110's, and 1-teens. They yard seems to be off to a good spring start.

Oh that’s not as bad as I was initially thinking. I’ll probably wind up building it later this summer when I have time from work

On today’s episode of what did the builders leave in my yard. Spoiler alert: it’s stone from the retaining wall.

Started work on a live edge for my flower bed. Any tips are appreciated. Hope it helps minimize the mulch that gets into the yard. Even if it doesn’t, I like the look of them.

You’ll love them! Keep it well lubricated
Going shopping for grease and a grease gun this weekend.
If I remember it wants a certain type of white grease? Check to be sure before you pull the trigger on a purchase. I use this:

And no gun needed just remove the screws and spray into the holes

once you have a good edge cut in, run your weed eater upside down across the live edge when you mow to keep it nice and clean! Other than every few months I go back with the edging tool and a spade to clean it back out.

I just looked in the manual and it doesn’t specify.
Might be wrong but I think it’s EP 0, but people have been okay with EP 00 if you are warmer climate.
I’ve used EP 0 and it’s been good. My stuff is nearly 5 years on the same unit and blades.

Little Sun Joe and the new rotary scissors did work today.

Spent last year mowing at 2” with old rotary and 1.5” with Sun Joe. Got it too late in season for it to recover from going lower. I had dropped it to 1” a couple weeks ago before a vacation. Dropped it to lowest setting on the Sun Joe which I believe is 0.6”. Got in 8,000 steps. I could only go 1 pass down before I had to stop, move the grass in the bag to the back by hand, then a trip back before I had to empty the bag. Poor battery died before I could even finish the front yard. Took 2 charges for the back. Guess it takes more energy when removing 0.4” compared to a regular mow when I can complete the whole 4,000 sq ft.

I had assembled the new Ryobi 40V trimmer & rotary scissors last weekend and did just a short test to make sure they work together. Put them to real use today for the first time, and must say I like them.

I ran out of mulch but did a big push to finish the rest of the live edge yesterday. My back is killing me.

Forgot weekly update yesterday for the "concrete" bermuda :geek: after more tree trimming along the property line. Our hood hit 97° yesterday and might get to 100° today uhhghgh.

Sooo, I stuffed our "organics" can for the 5th week in a row with trimmings off another non-maintained tree of a neighbor. The "organics" can is a city trash can like a household trash can, but specifically for yard clippings and trimmings that goes to the composting center. Compost is used by the city and available for "free" to trash/water customers.

Also decided to scalp the larger area of our backyard. I took it down to 3/16". Hoping this and the heat helps kick in more bermuda goodness and punch some late "winter" weed explosion in its business.

.... annnd for the "Concrete" bermuda update: runners are 3 weeks in the clay pot and are fully growing like crazy 🤓. Another day or two and I'll probably do a scissor ✂ trim on it.

I've been manually weeding poa annua for the last couple of weeks. Removing it all is pretty much an impossibly large task but the weather has been nice so I have been going out and spend about an hour a day just attacking the worst areas and trying to clean up the biggest clumps. Litlte by little I've made a really good dent in it.

The yard has been infested since I got it, but year by year I'm having slightly less of it each spring. Between the grass thickening up, trying to do pre-emergent properly, and aggressive de-weeding when it does show up, I actually have the front and sides pretty decently under control. Unfortunately the backyard is still completely infested, the grass is thin back there and the soil stays damp longer because of topograhy so it invites the poa.

What's most disheartening is how that shit never seems to stop coming in. If all that was gonna b ethere was already there and it was just a matter of killing/removing it, at least you could see a finish line, however I'll have little areas basically cleared and a few days later there are tons of new green blobs coming up in them. It's sisyphean, but getting out in the yard with my bucket and little weeder tool is cathartic I guess.

There is light at the end of the tunnel! We were there last year and you are dramatically lowering your future seed bank! We are still pulling Poa but nothing like last year and I hope next year will be even better.

Highly suggest you invest in some certainty or revolver, it’ll take care of it all, and then work on your pre emergent in the fall.
