Yard is looking great!

What are your plans for tree surface roots in back? I have maples (I know ..) in back which have terrible surface roots. Wondering if there is any other option than chainsaw. Would like to keep trees, as I am sure you do also. Too nervous to trim, as mine are large like yours and I do not want to harm health of trees.

I have one white oak that has bad surface roots. I have learned that you do not want to cut the roots out or just smother the roots with soil because they need oxygen. My plan was to add sand around the roots over time and hope that the grass holds the sand in place. I will not cover the roots entirely but only enough on the sides to use a rotary mower over them. Hope this helps.

How did your Tahoma 31 do in the backyard ? I remember you saying you put a few sod pieces back there last summer to see how it would do.
Honestly they struggled pretty badly last year. I knowingly put them in very shaded areas as a test and they went dormant during the summer. Since then I have cut down two trees that the sod pieces were under and trimmed existing trees this winter. The tahoma sod pieces are now growing so hope it continues as the light angles change. I did sprig two old flower beds last summer/fall and those spots are doing great.

Got a mow in and sprayed my first round of two of 8oz/1k sq ft glysophate. I want to clarify that I have 2 areas of tahoma that I sprigged last summer/fall already established in the back. Also there seems to be some hybrid Bermuda(probably 419) that I think the previous home owner put in. I’m not worried about killing the 419 but just going to let the tahoma take over as it’s in small areas. I have mostly weeds in the back (poa) that I am targeting. Lots of oak acorns germinated in the yard and flower bed that we have to clean up. And yes the back yard is a mess as I haven’t even mowed it this year. Need to grind two stumps still and dig up some roots in the back left corner.
Yard vibes currently is mullet style, business in the front, party in the back 😁

What a shame! I wish there was more we could do about it. I thought covering up with soil may work, sounds like you've already explored this method. Thank you for your input and pic, mine look about the same unfortunately. :(

I'm really excited to see this. Can you get us detailed photos of the project? Us cool season ppl don't get to see it that often :D
Yes I plan on posting the project. It will be different than last year. I need to aerate the front/side yard so I am going to use those plugs from aerating to "sprig" the back yard. Golf courses do this so it is common practice. I will just spread the plugs out in the back yard and top dress with sand. After the back yard has been saturated, I will use my mower to flatten the plugs. I will sand level the front/side yard after aerating. I am wondering how much coverage I will have with the plugs and the time it will take to fill in, should be interesting.
