Was it granular?.If yes you will probaly need to water it in..Because the pellets will stick to the blades and cause it to burn them. You want it sticking to the soil not the blades.Shouldnt have to water long though , just enough to get the pellets to fall to the ground

@Spammage What is a sure-fire way of making sure you don't burn? I have accidentally dropped a handful of fertilizer on the ground in one spot and it torched the grass. Completely dead about 8"x8" spot (it was getting dark, wife called me over to help her with something, I stopped and the spreader leaked a small portion on the ground). I picked up everything that I could see and drenched it not 20 minutes later. Was I just not able to pick it all up?

I just feel that when I'm throwing out fertilizer I'm always nervous that I'm throwing out too much (even thought I know I'm only throwing out 1lb of N).

Use Milo...just kidding. If you spill, a wet/dry vac comes in handy. Don't worry, your wife and neighbors already think you are crazy.

For spreading synthetics, the best way to ensure you are getting even coverage is to drop 1/2 in one direction, and then put the other 1/2 down at 90 degree paths to the first 1/2. Once you are calibrated to your spreader (know the proper speed, path width, spreader setting, etc), then you should be able to apply evenly with one pass.

Until you are comfortable, try applying 1/2 lb of N every 2 or 3 weeks instead of putting down the entire lb at once. It's better for the lawn anyway.

An easy tip is to keep a log of the product used and the spreader setting because different products with different prill sizes will flow and throw a little differently.

I also ALWAYS water in the app with the irrigation system. Rain is great, but to inconsistent. A tenth of an inch may not get the product to the soil, but a downpour will leave you wondering if you just fertilized the city sewer.

I wasn't able to water the fert in yesterday because I had to run a load of pipe and had to do the same today but it has been raining on and off lightly since I put it down. The pics above were shot just now and I don't see how that fert is going to make it to the soil with how thick the grass is.I am running the sprinkler now though.
