I did a complete lawn removal and leveling this winter. The temperature in NYC was very warm this winter and no snow at all so I decided to do a lawn renovation. I'm at a point that I need to buy seed, fertilizer and lime. I wanted to buy Jonathan Green black beauty ultra from my local ACE hardware store. JGB seed was from October 2022 with less than a percent of other crop and weed seed. The ACE hard brand seed which is also made by Jonathan Green has 0 weed and .4 other crop plus it's cheaper. The difference is 2 grass types r different between the two. See attached pictures. Which should I go with? Do the two gass types really matter bc I'm leaning towards ACE branded seed.

Other crop seed can be very problematic things like Poa Triv. I don't recognize those cultivars. Odds are they are all OK, but not top performers so, unless you have a strong reason to go with a particular variety, I would pick the mix with less "other crop seed". The bottom mix does have relatively more PRG and less KBG if that matters.

I want a brand that I can easily get at my local stores or online. I know I have a lot of weeds in my soil and I'm not going for low cut turf. I want a tall strong grass and if I need to do repairs in the future I can easily get more seed either online or at the store. From my research JG seed is darker and thinner flade TTTF then compared to GCI. I don't believe the claims that some grass brands have 0 other crop or weed. That's impossible from my understanding. Plus the cost of the seed is important. I'm not looking to spend a lot on my lawn every year. I want low cost maintenance and good looking lawn. As long as it looks uniform. Previous it wasn't uniform. I for sure don't want fine fescue and I'm not crazy about blue grass bc it takes super long to germinate and then needs a lot of water and care. Fine fescue and kbg dry out and go dormant way too soon in the summer in my area. I'm leaning towards turf type tall fescue and perennial rye

Go with the Jonathan Green. They are consistent in appearance year to year. I would trust them to match year to year and many people on this forum are very happy with them.

KBG doesn't use any more water than TTTF. It is more suited to colder temps for a number of reasons and takes more work in the transition zone. NY state isn't even close to areas where TTTF is significantly better than KBG. Use either one or even better a mix like you are looking at. KBG seed is tiny in comparison to TTTF so a10/90 seed mix will give you about 50/50 grass mix with a new lawn. Overseeding will favor TTTF more than KBG. .

I'll probably going with ACE branded seed. It has less other crop and 0 weed seeds

Always go with the one with lowest "other crop" percentage due to reasons mentioned above. "Other crop" is often worse than "weed" as long as weed is not "noxious"). One of these seed bags (the one branded Ace) is significantly cleaner. For me, it would be a no-brainer, especially since both are the exact same brand of seed.

As far as the varieties in one bag versus the other, Jonathan Green has their own proprietary grass varieties. All of them are supposed to be excellent, so that shouldn't factor in. Some sod farms use JG seed. This is definitely an apples to apples comparison (don't think I've ever said that before, as most posts on this site are not).

I also think mix 2 is better as it has more TTTF in it. It will give you a mostly TTTF lawn.

Should I use Scott's triple action for seeding with tenacity at seeding or should I wait until I see growth?
Definitely at seeding time (within 3 days). If used too late, it can mess with the grass as it germinates (been there, done that).

Thanks for the excellent feedback. Should I used peat moss. In the past I would first use my garden weasel to loosen the soil then apply seed, fertilizer and lime. Then I would go over the area again with the weasel to get seed soil contact. I would then walk the lawn to compact the soil and seed. The results were ok at best. I want to do the same steps but also add peat moss to hold the seed and water. I don't if I was driving the seed too deep with the second round of garden weasel. Should I not do the second weasel and just use peat moss

Yeah I'm going with ACE. I'm waiting on soil temps to go up. Currently it's 45.

If I were you, I would go with the Artimuss or look at this:
Mostly because the cultivars are new and have shown excellent results. If you want KBG, you could go with the Super Turf II. I used the Super Turf I for a reseeding project last fall and really liked how it looked.
You will need 25lbs for new seeding. Definitely go with a top dressing also.

Have you seen the ARTIMUSS seed tag? available in 25lb and 50s
Artimuss 50lb Bag (heritageppg.com)
I used Artimuss last year with good results. They offered smaller bags last year. Reach out to them see what they say.
I’m also doing an experiment comparing Artimuss SPF30 and another heritage TTTF KBG blend.
