I am looking at renting a verticutter and a lawn roller for fall lawn care. I don't have anything that is riding so everything that I am doing right now is manually. No money in budget for a riding lawn mower at this point. So my question is, where would be the best place to rent riding machines to verti-cut, top dress and level my lawn? Would you suggest a self-propelled lawn roller or a drag mat? Keep in mind that I have a very large and steeply sloped lawn that I will be treating.

I see a couple of issues. First it's September 18 and I would personally never attempt a leveling/smoothing this late in the growing season. And yes I realize you live in the Dallas area. At 21,000 ft2 thats going to be a lot of sand. I would start with a full 10-12 cubic yard dump truck load in the spring. And you might need another by the time you're done. I personally don't know that a riding verticutter exists. Toro/ Exmark make a ride on aerator.

Okay. I have a bunch of dead grass/cuttings/thatch on my grass which is interesting cause it hasn't even been 1 full year since the lawn was laid. Water is not penetrating and leaving the top part of the soil crackly dry. So all this watering is just going into the thatch and then drying out without penetrating the soil.

The lawn should be able to process a normal amount of clippings. I would catch them anytime you anticipate generating excess clippings.

The reason I would discourage any verticutting/leveling until spring is we are getting pretty close, if not already past the point where the lawn will recover before it goes dormant. The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting cooler. My Bermuda growth has slowed considerably in the last few weeks. Do what works for you though.

Maybe I am just getting ahead of myself. I keep reading all these posts of people renovating their lawn and making them look AMAZING. I am wanting that for my lawn and am totally impatient. I will try to hold onto my nickers till spring.

Most of the renovations you see in progress are cool season grasses. Fall is the best time for renovating them since there is less weed pressure and they get the fall and spring to grow before the summer heat comes.

Renovating warm season lawns is best to do late spring-early summer. That way they have a majority of the growing season to mature and store energy before the eventually go dormant in the winter.

Any major work like leveling or verticutting is best to do when the grass is actively growing e.g. Late spring-summer. Now that fall is a few days away and hours of daylight are diminishing our warm season grasses will start slowing down. So if any major work was done to them they might not recover 100% before growth stops.
