I know that it is quite too early to aerate just yet as my lawn isnt all that green yet from the prolonged cold temps (heck, we are even supposed to have a bit more snow this week in NC -- which is nuts!), but my question is for the spring/summer aeration project..

I have a relatively new yard that needs to be leveled out a bit.. about 3000 sq feet in total (front and back)..

Tiftuf sod..

Was thinking about doing an aeration/verticutting/top dressing (was thinking of using that Level mix -- like 70% sand and 30% compost that you can buy from SuperSod).. I need to plan this in advance so that I can rent the required equipment and get a buddy/hire a guy to help with the top dressing part.. My question is, "when is the best time to do this -- should I wait till mid summer when the growth is coming in nice and strong -- or best to just get it done late spring so that I can enjoy the newly flattened yard for the reel mower to perform best?"

I'm going to cheat and aerate sometime mid/late April and hope I'm green enough. I need to do it badly, and also plan to top dress and level some of the subtle areas lightly.

Once it's blown out wild growing in June/July I plan to do another aerate and heavier top dress myself.

I have extremely compacted rock and clay soil so, I'm hoping by working in some sand I can help.

I would wait until at least May before you go ahead and aerate and top dress as you want the lawn growing pretty good and it should be by then around here.

All you really need is sand but if you want to go with that mix from SuperSod it is totally up to you but I'm pretty sure it A LOT more expensive than just getting some masonry sand.

+1 - plus, any compost will break down and could mess up your level. Might be their intent actually to keep buyers coming back for more...
