Hi all,

Does anyone know what type of grass this is and should I over seed or just fertilize and kill the weeds?

Also I am going to kill the ivy in the back and probably have the trees taken out. What type of grass will grow in the shade in my back yard?

I saw one pact that I thought might be grass but upon further inspection it's nutsedge. It looks like you've got some runners underneath the weed mat so maybe it's st Augustine

As far as what grows in the shade you'll need to look into fescue and st Augustine

The light patterns I see in the picture look like it could possibly work for St. Augustine. But if you want grass that looks good you'll need to do whatever you can to thin out those trees. Either trim them or remove some. It's Likely that the ivy and other ground cover was installed because there isn't enough light for grass. Also tough to see any grass in those pictures. Lots of weeds. Maybe a closer picture of what you think may be the grass will help people ID.

Hey Jimmy, welcome to TLF, glad to have you here. It looks like you've in a perfect position to choose whatever type of grass you'd like to have in your lawn. There's definitely a few things working in your favor, as you can go with the grass type that works for your light situation, as well as your tool and time selection. There's definitely a lot of shade in that area, and depending on how much light opens up once you remove the trees, that might open up a few more options for you.

I'd recommend researching the grass type that you find would suit your needs, as we have users here that have shade tolerate types, as well as full sun types. Look through some of the lawn journals on the warm season lawn subforum to see what grass types might suit your situation.

When you're ready to renovate, take this advice: don't till the ground.

I clearly have a ton of clover in the front. I ordered some CCO weed killer so I'm going to start with that. As far as the back yard, clearly there is not one blade of grass.

Just closed on my first home and am not too optimistic about the grass potential.

Thanks! I'm am going to experiment a bit I guess.

Worst case, I'll hire someone to come in a fix it.
What are you wanting this area to look like? That might give us a bit more direction in terms of how to respond. With that being said, you're looking at a renovation with what looks like english ivy in one of the photos.

Hey Jimmy,
If I were you, I wouldn't worry about what type of grass you have and focus more on getting rid of those pine trees. From there as long as you get good sunlight you can choose what ever grass you want but it all depends on how much sunlight that area is able to get.

Yeah, I have a tree guy coming this week and I plan to take most of those trees out in the back and possibly one large one in the front that alone should free up a good bit of sunlight I'll keep you guys posted and reach back out once that happened.

Ehh, that's a weed. Man, I'm not being rude, but you've got a LOT of weeds in your yard. Showing a random leaf blade is not the best way for us to help identify what type of grass is growing under the huge canopy of weeds that are present in that picture.

I'd suggest going to a big box store, getting a hose-end bottle of Weed B Gon, spraying the area, and then taking a picture of it in a week to help thin out the majority of the weeds in the area. We might be able to get a better idea then.
