It's getting to that time of the year and it occurred to me I'm not entirely prepared. With regards to the spring scalp the 3 methods are obviously: 1) rotary + bag, 2) GM + enclosed catcher, or 3) reel + open catcher. I was thinking I'd get/borrow a rotary however my grass is shorter than the lowest setting on a rotary. That leaves the reel option but we all know the open catcher is pretty poor with green grass and probably worthless with dormant grass.

What would you do? (Other than just let it grow tall enough to use the rotary lol)

@Jericho574 In your situation I would say it would be best to take it down with the reel(whichever is backup) and catch as much as you can with the open catcher. Then go over the area with the rotary in the hopes that it will suck up some more grass that's left over.

The GM1000 should catch most of your clippings. Have you checked the adjustment of your grass shield and cutoff bar? See page 7-12 of the service manual. Or are you talking about the Tru-Cut? Don't they have an adjustable grass shield too?

But to answer your question, if you are below the lowest setting on your rotary mower I would use either of your reels and catch as much as you can, then use the rotary mower on the lowest setting with the bag attached to suck up any additional clippings you can.

Optionally, I like to use a verticutter/dethatcher in that mix break up the old matted stolons and make space for new growth.

I used a verticutter this year and it really helped me get the reel as low as possible. I will definatley be using it in the spring going forward.

Sold the GM so am just rocking a TC this year. Last year my rotary died so I've been debating whether or not to obtain a new one.

Thanks, sounds like a plan!
Ah, gotcha - I was looking at your profile and saw the GM1000 listed.
