Hi all,

It is just the beginning of spring here now; however, last summer mine/my neighbours lawn started turning brown, thinned, and died. I took a picture recently, and I have attached it below.

I am not sure what the problem is that is causing our lawn to do this? Is it because it is too compacted?

What would be the necessary steps to regrow grass in this area.

I am eager to learn from you experts-thanks in advance!

I see some branches in the picture. Is that a tree or a bush? Does it get really bushy an expand out to that dead patch?

Without seeing what the rest of the area looks like it's hard to say but I'm wondering if the bush/tree is limiting the sunlight and the grass is dying off?

Hey Vin-

Welcome to TLF.

I lost a similarly sized section of my lawn last year. I thought it was just dormant and would come back, but when I inspected it closely, the turf pulled right up. Under the dead turf I found a bunch of white grubs. They feed on lawn roots in the late summer . I don't know for sure if that is what happened, but there's a good chance it was grubs. If you pull up some more of that surrounding grass, look for c shaped white grubs. They still may be buried deeper since we're just coming out of winter, so you may not see them. If you find them, there are products to kill adult grubs or prevent future ones. It also could have dies due to lack of water or sunlight.

Either way you'll want to patch that area with some new grass seed. I'd team up with your neighbor and split a small bag of grass seed, starter fertilizer (that prevents crabgrass) like this- https://tinyurl.com/y76n5f5q , and a bag of peat moss. Spread the seed, spread the fert, cover in a light coating of peat moss (peat moss will help keep things moist). The goal with watering is to always keep the seed moist at all times until germination(5-25 days depending on the seed you choose).

Mow when the grass gets to 2-3 inches.
