Unique Paver Patio Sand Question

177 Views 1 Reply 2 Participants Last post by  zoysiaboy
I've seen, a lot of questions and answers about too much sand in between the compacted gravel and the pavers for a patio. I'm wondering if there is a minimum amount. I'm in the process of re-doing my patio, and it would be a lot easier in my case to do a half inch of sand to keep things at the right height. Would that be too little, or does it even matter as long as its not too much?

1/2 inch of sand should be fine. I usually shoot for about 3/4 of an inch. Its the base below the sand that is most important. Make sure you have a good mixed aggregate and its nice and compacted to prevent shifting of the patio through the years. Also be sure to tamp the pavers down well after laying, this will also help with mitigating any future settling.
